In autumn on this day 秋のヤマノクチ he comes again riding a white rabbit to pick up the seeds of trees and plants.
Yamanokami has large wings.

In the forest 高嶺さんの森 Takanesan no mori in the North of the Shrine 諏訪神社 Suwa Jinja there are mitsume no usagi 三つ目のうさぎ rabbits with three eyes.
They are rarely seen, but if someone sees them, there will be misfortune in the village. People try to avoid even mentioning this rabbit.

There are a few legends about sacred trees where the Tengu sits and takes a rest -
Tengu no matsu 天狗の松, Tengu no koshikake matsu 天狗の腰掛松 .
People protect these trees and dear not cut them down for fear of bad luck and misfortune.
For example in Chichibu town, Higashi-Chichibu, Ogano, ...

Tengu no tomarigi テングノトマリギ（天狗のとまり木）a tree where Tengu take a rest
Their legends are handed down in the villages. If someone tries to cut a tree town, he will be flipped in the air or falls under the tree.
At night such a tree sometimes makes a loud, painful sound, or falls down all by itself

If villagers check in the morning, sometimes there is nothing special to be seen.

In Yamanashi sacred trees are used by the Yamanokami 山の神　Deity of the Mountain or a Tengu.

Along the pass 烏首峠 Torikubi Toge, which connects 名栗 Naguri with 浦山 Urayama in Chichibu there is 大楓 a huge maple tree where the Tengu takes a rest.
When the forest workers cut it down, there begun a lot of accidents to happen, a wood cutter fell ill and eventually even the man who bought the lumber was hit with bad luck.

Rituals for seeking spiritual, religious help through a medium.

hotoke "Buddha" in this context means a dead person.
In former times people often felt cursed by the gods or by ancestors or enemies.
To help solve their problems, they asked a medium for help.



The Itako shamans of 恐山 Mount Osorezan, Aomori can get in contact with dead family members.

In the village of 下川 Shimokawa, the unmarried girls came together every month on the third day to do needlework, went to the shrine in the fields and offered prayers.
In 三崎 Misaki, the day was not fixed. But about 50 years ago, all these customs came to an end. Sometimes people who believe in 淡島様 Awashima Sama meet at an open space and dance around the unmarried girls. Sometimes the Deity comes to possess a girl as a kind of Kamioroshi.

The shrine Awashima jinja in Wakayama is well visited by women praying for childbirth.
There are many Awashima Halls 淡島堂 Awashima Do, in Japan, dating back to Awashima Gannin 淡島願人 and his followers, who walked all along Japan and dispersed the belief in this healing shrine.

kamioroshi 神下ろし
Every year on the 12th day of the 12th lunar month, there was a festival for Yamanokami.
At 当屋の家 the home of the festival leader Kamioroshi occurred, which was called shiramono tsuke シラモノツケ. A Yamabushi mountain priest and the villagers offered prayers to have the Kami come down to 男のミコ the male Shrine disciple. The Kami would jump around in the room of the Miko and then give takusen 託宣 an oracle.
The jumping and dancing in the room was called okagura オカグラ O-Kagura.
This custom has been abolished in the early Taisho period (1912).

hotoke no kuchikiki 仏の口聞き
The blind ミコサマ Miko Sama (Itako) from 駒林 Komabayashi village was 20 years when she started her career as a student with another Miko Sama. She became quite skilled in calling the spirits of dead people into her body. A grown-up had to be dead for 49 days, a child for at least 35 days.
An old woman who had lost her husband came for a meeting. The Miko Sama put on 白衣 white robes (of the dead), performed o-harai オハライ cleansing rituals and then begun kamioroshi 神オロシ to call for a Kami. The protector deity of the village, 鎮守様 Chinju Sama came to her, but after that she did not remember a thing.

Yamanokami oroshi 山の神おろし
In the back of the mountain is a shrine of 十二山神社 Juunisan Jinja. Its festival for Yamanokami, the Mountain Deity, is on the 12th day of the second and 12th lunar month.
The menfolk of the village gather at a certain home, make ablutions, have a special dinner and after that perform ablutions with cold water. A ten-year old boy is placed on 祭壇 the festival altar, his eyes blindfold. He has to hold 幣束 a ritual wand and all say ritual prayers. Then the men stump on the wooden floor and the Tatami floor mats. When the body of the child begins to sway, the Deity has come into him and people can ask questions about the future:
Should they go to work in the mountain forest? Should they care for the fields? How will the harvest turn out? Who is going to win this or that law suit?
and any kind of personal question.

After the sudden death of a parent, the son went to 八海山 Mount Hakkaisan to have Hotokedashi performed.
The medium told them:
"I was cursed by someone! I can not tell you who that was, but do not fall into the trap of someone who curses people. Don't give up, don't give in.
Stay strong and I will be able to go to the Buddhist paradise (joobutsu 成仏)."

On the way to the mountain the luggage of the cow's back always begun to slide, even if he put some stones on the other side.
The oracle told him that he should venerate the Jigami ヂガミ Kami of the Land. When he did, the luggage was straight from that day on.
Next time he went to the mountain, he took the stones and threw them away. But now again he was cursed by the Jigami.
The Toigiki medium told him he should venerate the stones as the Jigami himself to find peace.

There are various places where people go for this in need of advise.
For example 真光寺の山伏 the Yamabushi of temple Shinko-Ji - 吉岡のアリマサン Arima San of Yoshioka -
畑野のドンドコヤ Dondokoya of Hatano - 中興のハッカイサン Hakkaisan of Chuko -
相川の二ツ岩サン Futatsu-Iwa San of Aikawa and others.
Many go there during the O-Bon rituals for the ancestors. But if you call a dead spirit back too often, it will decrease its status in Paradise, so there should be a good reason for doing it.

jigami no tatari 地神の祟り curse of the local deity
"There is a local saying "If you do not venerte Jigami, the area will be cursed".
Not only the one family that forgets to venerate, but also the next 7 neighbours will come under the curse.
Many families feeling under a curse visit a Shaman (like Arima san or Dondokoya) to get relief and instructions on how to venerate the Jigami.

A child very much beloved by his mother died, but she had forgotten to put his favorite toy in the coffin and he could not cross Sanzu no Kawa, 三途の川. the river to the other world. He had called his mother but she did not hear him and so he got stuck in limbo, as the Toigiki told the mother.
"If you want to help me get over, please make some garments and give them to the Buddhist priest and let him perform rituals for me!" -

In winter the leaves of the plant stay on the branches, bending around the branches to avoid the cold. Hence their name
nindoo (nintoo) 忍冬 to endure the winter

Their blossoms have a sweet taste and children lick to sui 吸 suck them. hence the name
suikazura 吸葛 "sucking the vine"



There are various varieties of this plant growing in Japan.
The blossoms come out in May, June and the whole area begins to smell sweet.
In autumn the black berries become visible.

すいかずら Suikazura
There is a magic practise to bury many snakes in a hole in the ground where nobody else comes, and pray to them as deities.
It is the same as with the Inugami 犬神 Dog Deity.
If people get possessed by this deity, they will get ill. If the source of their possession is known there is a method to heal them, they say.
But this is not true.

In 徳島県三好郡祖谷山 the Iya valley of Tokushima there is a kind of Inugami called Suikazura.
It is said to be a bit larger than a rat and lives in the warmth of the hearth in homes.

Sarugami 猿神 Monkey Deity
Once upon a time
a strange Yokai monster (the Nue) was flying in the sky. A brave samurai shot it down with three arrows.
The head became Inugami 犬神 the Dog Deity,
the body became Sarugami and
the tail became the plant suikazura スイカズラ / 吸葛 honeysuckle, (other versions say 蛇 a serpent).

The head flow off to 讃岐国 Sanuki and became Sarugami.
The body flew off to 阿波国 Awa and became 犬神 Inugami,
the tail flew off to 備前国 Bizen and became the plant Suikazura.

Once a man peeked into a deep well and saw the figure of a human being, all in gray, like a monster.
When he called the other villagers to have a look , there was nothing special to be seen.
This must have been the deed of a Tengu.

Tengu no hayashi 天狗の囃し / 囃子 music group of the Tengu
At Mount 仲木山 people heard a strange music from June to September, maybe once in two months, on days with light mist, from early morning until 3 in the afternoon.
There was the sound of a 笙 Sho flute and something like 三味線 a Shamisen.
The locals call it 天狗さんの囃し "the Music Group of the Tengu".

When a young woman or a child suddenly disappears, it is spirited away by the Gods or by a Tengu.
In the family of 赤岩の家 Akaiwa there was a boy named 周平 Shuhei who once went to the forest and never came back. An oracel told them he was abducted by a Tengu and would never come back.

. Harunasan 榛名山と伝説 Legends about Mount Haruna and the Tengu .

On 榛名山 Mount Harunasan, Harunayama (1,449 m), there lives a Tengu. He dug out earth from the bottom of 榛名湖 Lake Harunako and tried to add it to 富士山 Mount Fujisan.

Kobo Daishi Kukai 弘法大師 once came to 榛名山 Mount Harunayama and wanted to make 1000 valleys.
But the local Tengu managed to hide one valley and Daishi sama went back to 紀州の高野山 Kishu, to Mount Koyasan.

the story tells of Kobo Daishi trying to build 100 temples and the local Tengu, who felt his home in danger, hid one valley for the temple construction.

Or it was 角落山 Tsunoochiyama (1,220 m), the "Mountain where the horns had fallen down", where a small sanctuary for a Tengu had been build.
When 源頼光 Minamoto no Yorimitsu tried to drive out the Oni, the horns fell down here and a mountain was created.

Shiranesan 白根山 Mount Shirane (2610 m)
on the border between Katashina and Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture.


At Katashina village, the farmers from the hamlets 上小川、穴沢、仲井 and 下小川 all climb up together to Mount Shiranesan.
In former times it used to be the 16th day of the 6th lunar month, but recently it could also be in the 8th month. People who have to climb up use the time from the 12th day of the 6th lunar month to start preparing shoojin ショウジン with ritual purifications and then all the men gather at one place to climb up.
If a woman climbs up, she will be picked up by a Tengu and thrown down the valley.

There is a Tengu by the river. Once a man went fishing by the river and caught quite a large amount of fish. The thought this was quite strange and then he heard a sound ゴロゴロ gorogoro like stoned falling and he saw a large ball of fire.
At this point his net suddenly became very heavy and he could not pull it up any more. Than called out:
"天狗が出た The Tengu has come!" and fled as fast as he could. He had to stay in bed for 3 days.

こびの天狗山 Kobi no Tengu San
岐阜県美濃加茂市森山3-5-57 / Moriyama chō, Minokamo-shi, Gifu
古井の天狗山 Kobi no Tenguyama Shrine

This statue is 12 m high, the tallest Tengu statue in Japan.
It belongs to the sect 荒薙教 Aranagi Kyo with the main deity 荒薙大神 Aranagi Okami.
Tengu is the messenger of this deity.
The sect of Aranagi Kyo was founded in 1900 by Toda Yoki.
It is a mixture of Shinto and Buddhist aspects and rituals.

At 胆吹山 / 伊吹山 Mount Ibukiyama a shamon 沙門 wandering priest was reciting the 念仏 Nenbutsu prayer. Suddenly he heard a voice:
"Tomorrow I will come and bring you to Paradise!"
The next day Kannon Bosatsu appeared and took him away, in front of the eyes of his disciples.
But the next day they found him hanging all naked high up in a tree!
It must have been the evil deed of an old fox, badger or a Tengu !


十二社神社 Junisha Jinja
Around 1928, at the shrine 十二社神社 Junisha Jinja someone found a purse with a backbone inside. When he picked it up, there was a huge rumbling in the ground and then a large rock came rumbling down the stone stairway. In front of the main hall there seemed to be 修験者 a mountain saint wearing a long white robe, wielding a hand fan in the form of a leaf and using a long walking staff - It must have been this Tengu who had moved the rock.

和良村 Wara mura

In the hamlet of 下洞集落 Shimo-Hora a man named 根の松 Komatsu went missing. The villagers said he had been abducted by a Tengu. They all went into the forest and called "Give us back Komatsu!" Eventually he came back with an innocent look, not remembering anything.
There was also a 天狗松 Tengu Matsu in the village, but it has dried up now.

Once a traveler stayed at a lodging in the village. At night there was a meeting of the local Tengu and he was invited to join them. He saw making another man drink 鉛の熱湯 lead in hot water. When he came home, the other traveler had not come home. He had been a man who used to brag all the time and now met his punishment.

At a mountain named 橋角 there was a fir tree called お伊勢さん O-Ise San. Humans were not allowed to touch it.
Once 浦野九一 Urano Kyuichi was collecting firewood in the forest and took a nap under the tree at lunchtime. Suddenly he heard the Tengu call him in his dream: "It's already sunset, you better get home!"
When he woke up, it was indeed sunset and he hurried home, greatful!

Sometimes the sound of someone cutting trees, ガラガラ garagara can be heard in the forest. This is the Tengu doing his job.

Tengu sa 天狗さ Tengu san
In the village 谷汲村 Tanigumi mura suddenly it became quite dark and the earth sounded ガラガラガラガラ garagara garagara . Then a Tengu appeared in red robes, holding a great fan in his hand, wearing wooden geta 下駄　sandals with 一本歯 only one "tooth"。

In the village 春日村 Kasuga mura they needed to build a new bridge over the river and cut down 大檜と大杉 a large cypress and a large pine tree.
That night a Tengu appeared in the dream of the village headman, complaining they had taken away his resting places and he would punish the village with fire.
And indeed, that evening a fire broke out and destroyed most of the village. This was the great fire on the 18th day of the 1st month in 1877.
In former times
on a rainy day, the Tengu could be heard beating the drum at 藤川谷 Fujikawatani. But now this sound is not heard any more.

The 17th day of the 7th lunar month is 祇園祭 the day of the Gion Festival. The villagers have to burn kagaribi かがり火 watch fires, otherwise they will be cursed by the Tengu.

Tengu no Oyashiki 天狗のお屋敷 the mansion of the Tengu
Once a man went to the mountain forest to make charcoal. He found a ball looking like a bundle of leaves hanging in the branches. He took a stick and hit it. All of a sudden there was a strange sound, a thunderstorm broke out and he could not go home that evening.
When he came back home the next day, he fell ill. A diviner told him the ball of leaves was the mansion of a Tengu and he had been punished. The diviner then performed exorcist rituals.

The villagers had put out a net for catching birds, when suddenly a strong wind begun to blow and something like large legs with blood dripping from them got caught. When they came closer, there was nothing in the net.
It must have been a Tengu who had passed after all.

In the forest of Hakusan Shrine, about twice a year there is the strange sound of trees breaking at night. But nothing is seen next morning.
This must be the mischief of a Tengu, they say.

Once a woodcutter was taking a bath in the mountain hut, when he heard a voice from a nearby tree.
"Are you feeling good?"
The woodcutter begun making booing noises to scare his opponent, but the other voice just laughed "I will remember this!"
Next morning he found his large ax bent over and not to be used any more.

After a rain ritual near Mount Ontakesan a farmer went to the Jigokudani 地獄谷 the Valley of Hell, to express his gratigude.
On a boulder he saw a frightening creature with a long nose like a Tengu, sitting and staring into the valley. Soon after that a huge storm broke out.

At the villages 朝日村 Asahi mura and 高根村 Takane mura there are sometimes cows found in places on the other side of a river or ravine, where there is no bridge. A Tengu must have kidnapped them and thrown them over there.

清見村 Kiyomi mura

Once a child, helping with the field work, was on his way home but got lost. They found it in a place where not even grown-ups can go easily.
A Tengu must have kidnapped it and put it over there.

Once a man was taking off his shoes, when a man invited him to come along, if he did not want to be kidnapped by a Tengu. He followed the man, but he did not like the place where they were going. So after one hour he made his way back home. And there he realized - he had been away for 5 days, living with a Tengu after all.

Once a little boy went missing on his home from the fields. A man coming over the pass 平湯峠 Hirayutoge said he had met him. The child had told him he had been kidnapped by a Tengu and learned a lot of interesting things. Now he could fly to any place where he wanted to be.

kyoojin ishi 狂人石 rock that makes people go crazy
There is a rock, about 1.5 m high, which makes people go crazy when they touch it.
Nearby lived a Tengu. If the Tengu is in a bad mood, he will throw people down the stone steps, some children had this experience, but they were never hurt.

Once upon a time
three houses close to Myojin Jinja had been destroyed by fire.
Someone had seen a man with a red nose and face walking past, so they thought it must have been the Tengu causing the fire.

神岡町 Kamioka cho

In the year 1924, on a morning in June, a boy who had fallen into the pond of the shrine went missing. An oracle told the parents they hed to find him by half past eleven in the morning, otherwise his life would be in danger. Shortly before 12 they found the child high up on a mountain. This must have been the evil deed of a Tengu.

There was an old man who had been with the famous 鞍馬山の天狗 Tengu of Kuramayama, Kyoto.
He appeared all of a sudden, went into the 鉱山 mine and worked day and night. He could also tell ill people the reason of their problem.
When the mine was closed, he said he was going back to Mount Kurayama. He was always clad like 山伏姿 a mountain priest.

In July of 1931, a farmer had gone to tend to his fields and never came back. He might have been abduceted by a Tengu or kidnapped by the Gods.
They never made a funeral for him and still wait that he might come back.

Around 1955 there was a fire in a farmhouse. One child said:
"I saw a man with a long nose wearing something red who told me to make a fire!"
This must have been the local Tengu.

Sometimes a Tengu comes to abduct a boy from the village.
Tengu like children and if children go playing in the mountain forest, they might not come back.
If the villagers go looking for them with flutes and drums, they often come back.

Kichigo 吉吾 sat under a tree and asked the Tengu what he feared most.
The answer was いけが（茨 ibara）wild roses .
When the Tengu asked Kichigo what he feared most, Kichigo said
botamochi 牡丹餅 "Peony Cakes".
A few days later when the Tengu was asleep, Kichigo placed a lot of wild roses around his bed. As a revenge, the Tengu now threw many peony cakes down the roof of Kichigo's house. Kichigo picked them up and ate them all.

Once a hunter spent the night deep in the mountains and heared the sound of falling trees all night.
Next morning when he went to check the place, there was nothing at all.

Tengu-daoshi, Tengu daoshi 天狗倒し / テングダオシ "Tengu knocking down trees"



The sound of cutting down trees with a saw or ax is heard at night, but next morning nothing is to be seen.
This refers to strange noises in a lonely forest.

This phenomenon of a strange sound is especially known in 岐阜県 Gifu, 福井県 Fukui, 福島県 Fukushima, 茨城県 Ibaragi、石川県 Ishikawa and 埼玉県 Saitama.

Tengu-daoshi and other strange events in the mountains is often considered to be the deeds of mountain gods or tengu in the eastern half of Japan, but in the western half they are considered to be the deeds of the Kappa yamawaro.
Phenomena such as the tengu-daoshi (sounds such as that of a large tree falling) are considered to be done by the yamawaro themselves, and in the Kumamoto Prefecture, other than stories where they would make falling tree or falling rock noises, there are also stories where they would imitate human songs and where they make sounds imitating mokko (a tool made of bamboo or woven grass for carrying heavy loads) dropping dirt or even the explosion sounds of dynamite.
However, the tengu does not play no role at all in those regions, because in some parts, such as the Oguni in Kuamoto Prefecture, there are no yamawaro legends and they are instead considered to be the deeds of tengu.

天狗倒し（てんぐだおし）Tengudaoshi
天狗の仕業とされる古杣と同様の怪異[8]。同様に、山中を歩いていると、大木を切るような音が聞こえ、続いて地響きと共に大樹の倒れる音がするが、その音がした方へ行ってみても、やはり木が切られた痕跡はないというものである[8][9]。突風が吹いたような轟音が急に起こることを、天狗が突然降りてくるものとして天狗倒しということもあり、日本三大修験道の山の一つとされる英彦山で起きることがよく知られている[10]。長野県南佐久郡北相木村では、天狗倒しは冬に多かったという[11]。
埼玉県飯能市の嶬峠の裏の椚平（くぬぎだいら）や久通、栃尾谷の上の四本松と呼ばれる山などの山小屋で泊まっていると、外で木を伐ったり、それがドカンと倒れる音が盛んにするが、朝になってみると小屋の周りにはどこにも木が倒れていず「天狗倒し」と人は呼んだという。奈良県吉野郡天川村でも、昔はよく山でゴチゴチと木を伐る音がした。ある月の良い晩に外へ出てみると、ゴチゴチと木を伐る音がしてやがてカンカンと木に楔を打つ音がし、ついで木の倒れる音がした。木の倒れるのも月夜だからよく見えたが、妙なことがあるものだと翌日見に行くと、何もなかったという[12]。
山梨県東八代郡芦川村（現・笛吹市）の中芦川部落では、天狗倒しは山の神の仕業といわれる[13]。栃木県安蘇郡田沼町（現・佐野市）では、山仕事の合間に仮眠をとる前に「○○時になったら起こして下さい」と山の神にお願いしておくと、その時刻に山の神が天狗倒しによって目覚めさせてくれるといわれる[14]。
狐狸の仕業ともいわれ、国東半島ではタヌキが尻尾で木を叩いて木が倒れる音を起こして人を騙すものを天狗倒しという[15]。福島県福島市飯坂地区での天狗倒しはタヌキのほかにキツネの仕業ともいわれ、燃えさしをぶつければ消えるといわれる[16]。
民俗学者・桜井徳太郎は、人里と離れた山中を歩くことによる不安な心理から、このような山中の音の怪異の伝承が生まれたものとする説を述べている[9]。
空木返し（そらきがえし）sora kigaeshi
鹿児島県肝属郡百引村（現・鹿屋市）や大分県に伝わる怪異[17][15]。同様に、山中で大木の倒れる音がするが、その音がした方へ行ってみても、やはり木が切られた痕跡はないというものである[17]。
天狗倒し同様に天狗の仕業とされるほか、キツネやタヌキの仕業とする地方もあり、大分での空木返しはタヌキが後足で石を蹴って人を脅かすものという[15]。
空木倒し（からきだおし）kara kigaeshi
鹿児島県東部などでいう古杣と同様の怪異[18]。新潟県岩船郡三面村（現・村上市）でいう空木倒しはムジナによる悪戯といわれ、夜中の山中から斧で大木を切る音が聞こえ、やがて木が倒れる音が響くが、木が地面に落ちた音は聞こえないという[19]。福島県での空木倒しは天狗倒しと同様、深山の幽谷に棲む天狗が起こすものといわれる[20]。
杖突（つえつき）tsuetsuki
土佐民俗学会発行による『近世土佐妖怪資料』に「杖突古杣と云事」として古杣と共に記述のある土佐の怪異。土佐郡蓮池村（現・高知市）で夜分に何者かが杖を突くような音を立てて通るといい、これに遭うと死んでしまうといわれる。

A forest worker stayed at a hut in the mountains. He heared the sound of foxes and badgers kicking down trees and even Tengu doing this.
He went out with a light in hand and on the spot all the spook stopped.

A forest worker stayed at a hut in the mountains. He heard the sound of a saw cutting trees, コンツ、コンツ kontsu kontsu kontsu, like an echo in the valley.
It was really a strange experience.
On rainy and cloudy nights at the foot of 三鈷室山 Mount Sankomuro san (863 m), the sound of felling a tree can be heard three times: バカン、バカン、バカン bakan bakan bakan.

At night, at the foot of a swamp of 立割山 Mount Tatewariyama (767 m), a hunter's dog suddenly sat down. From the far end of the swamp the sound of パカーン bakaaan was heard, like soomwan using an ax to fell a tree a few times. Then a very strong wind begun to blow.

If forest workers spent a night in a hut or a cave, they hear the sound of falling trees reveberating in the forest. Next morning nothing is to be seen.
This is called Tengu daoshi, 空木倒し sora kidaoshi or Kikair-Bo.

Around the 5th lunar month, if fishermen go out on a night with strong fog, they hear the sound of a boulder falling in the sea. They also hear the sound of trees falling or Tengu throwing stones.

These tales are told by fishermen, who have to go out in the fifth lunar month, when there is fog on the sea.

Iso-Onna is another name for Umi-Hime, princess of the sea. She is a Yokai of the souls of drowned people.
They come to the beach on windless nights and ask the captain of a boat to bring back the soul of a drowned person.
They are especially known in Kyushu.
磯女と海姫様は同じもの。正体は水死者。凪の日に女の姿で出て、海の中にある魂を陸に帰してくれるよう、船頭に頼む。

When 山崎助四郎 Yamasaki Sukeshiro was still a young man, he used to be a seko 勢子 helper of the local hunters. Once they passed cave in the mountain, there was a sudden sound all over the place. The surroundings became dark and they experienced a "Tengu knocking down trees". They all huddled down and covered the heads with their arms until the noise had stopped.
Another hunter went out in the early morning when the kiji 雉 pheasants come out. While he was waiting in the mountain forest, there was a noise of "Tengu knocking down trees". He huddled down and fired his gun in great fear. There was a sudden silence. When it became light enough he went around seraching and found a kamo 鴨 duck shot dead. Now he knew that it was not the Tengu, but a flock of ducks that had made the noise.
