The current building was built at the end of the 18th century in Oki-zukuri style, with a thatched roof. Although only used on special occassions, the sumo ring on the grounds is well maintained.
Every other year on May 3,
the shrine fills with people for the Reitaisai Matsuri, one of the three great festivals of the Oki Islands. You can witness kagura dancing, lion dancing, and horseback archery known as yabusame.
- Right next door to the shrine
is the local history museum, the Oki Kyodokan, housed in a lovely white wooden building that was once a town hall. There you can see exhibits that cover the history and folklore of the islands.
In the grounds behind the museum, you will find a lovely 150-year-old thatched farmhouse that you can enter and explore.
Also nearby is the Goka Soseikan, where displays and videos introduce the natural environment and many local traditions of the islands, such as bull sumo.

Imamiya Jinja 今宮神社 Imamiya Shrine, Chichibu
A Shinto shrine located in Naka-machi, Chichibu City.
One of Japan's oldest shrines, since ancient times it has been dedicated to a water god embodied by a miraculous spring welling up from under Mt. Buko.
Until the distant Nara period, the shrine was also dedicated to other deities such as the Eight Dragon Kings.
In 1535, a portion of the spirit of Susanoo-no-Okami from Imamiya-jinja Shrine in Kyoto was ritually transferred to this shrine when an epidemic raged in the region.
The grounds encompass 龍神池 Ryujin Pond, the oldest spring in Chichibu,
as well as a huge tree called the 龍神木 Ryujinboku which is over 1,000 years old.

Appearance:
Ryūjin are powerful dragons who rule over bodies of water and serve as tutelary deities of those places.
Ryūjin can refer to any dragon that is worshiped as a local kami, including major dragons such as the hachidai ryūō, Zennyō Ryūō, Kuzuryū, Seiryū, and so on.
But when it is used as a proper title (i.e. Ryūjin) it most commonly refers to the dragon god of the sea — Watatsumi in Shintō tradition or Shagara Ryūō in Buddhist tradition.

robes (e, koromo 衣)
1. A general term for traditional Japanese (as opposed to Western-style) clothing.
2. A general term for any formal outer garments worn by Buddhist monks in Japan; also called dharma robes (hōe 法衣).
3. A Chinese-style robe that is worn by Buddhist monks in East Asia; also called a long robe (jikitotsu 直裰).
The koromo has long sleeves and a collar and is tied by a sash or belt (obi 帶) around the waist. Zen monks in Japan wear a Japanese-style long cotton kimono (yukata 浴衣) under the koromo, with a collared white undershirt (juban 襦袢) under the kimono. The ceremonial kesa, a vestige of the upper robe that covered one shoulder of Buddhist monks in India, is worn over the koromo. Formally dressed Zen monks thus wear two layers of traditional Japanese clothing (kimono), covered by a Chinese Buddhist long robe (koromo), which is topped by an Indian Buddhist robe (kesa).

- quote -
A long time ago, there lived an old man and a woman who were poor but kind.

It happened on one year-end day.
The old man and woman were making hats made from straw.
They were going to sell the hats in the town and buy rice cakes for New Year.

“There are five hats to sell. I guess I can buy rice cakes at least.”
“I hope so. And please be careful because it will be snowy tonight.”

The old man left home with his five hats.
Soon after he left, it began snowing.
Because the snow became worse, he hurried his way to the town.

When he arrived on the edge of his village, he found six Jizo standing in a row.
Snow piled up on their heads and shoulders.
The old man couldn’t pass by the Jizos as they were.

“Oh, poor Jizos. You must be freezing under the snow. Put these hats on your head.”

The old man put his hats on Jizos, which he was going to sell in the town.
But he only had five hats while there were six Jizos.
Then the old man took his hat off and put it on the sixth Jizo.

On returning home, the old woman were surprised and said,
“You came home so early. What happened with your hat?”
The old man told her about six Jizos.
“Oh you did such a nice thing. It doesn’t matter if we have rice cakes for New Year or not.”
She said so smiling.

At that night, they heard a song in the middle of the night.
♪Where is the old man’s house?
♪We are here to give you a present in return.
♪Where is the old man’s house?
♪We are here to give you a present in return.

The voice of the song came closer and closer. And finally when it arrived in front of the old man’s house,
They heard a sound of leaving something and the voice disappeared after all.
The old man opened the door quietly. Then he saw the back view of Jizos with his hats on.
And he found tons of rice cakes for New Year and delicious foods in front of the house.
