A monster of an ox cart. Flames are coming from the axles.
Inside are some monsters. The oxen pulling the cart has a long tongue.
On the saddle are eyes and open mouths.

gissha o hiku oto 牛車をひく音 the sound of an ox cart
Once on a summer evening a man was on his way home from the mountain,
when it suddenly became light and he heard the sound of an ox cart from behind.
But when the road made another bend, he could not see anything and was back at the same spot.
He must have been bewitched by a Tanuki !

Once upon a time, when the 藤原氏 Fujiwara clan thrived in Kyoto,
the 菅原氏 Sugawara clan leader used ushiguruma 牛車 an ox cart to flee from the city.
When he reached 室賀峠 the Muroga Toge pass the oxen had lost all its power and fell down dead.
The people burried the oxen with rituals and classical poetry, and thus the animal turned into a stone.
It is now venerated as a deity for teeth and mouth diseases.
A special ritual is held on doyoo no ushi no hi 土用の丑の日 the day of the oxen in late-summer
to keep its spiritual power alive.

A man walked in a tunnel at midnight, when he heard a horrible sound.
First he thought there was the spook of ムジナ a Mjina badger, or Nopperabo,
but it was the sound of ushiguruma 牛車 an ox cart.

. Shitennoji 四天王寺 Temple Shitenno-Ji Legends .
During the construction of Shitennoji temple, ox carts were used to transport the stones.
When the construction was finished, one bull turned into a stone.
He is now venerated at 石神の祠 a small Ishigami Shrine, Ishigami Do 石神堂.

It was around 1235. During a great rainstorm, earth came down flowing from 神室山 Mount Kamuo san.
It rained for seven days and seven nights and the flow became a mountain.
On the earth, a white horse was seen by the villagers. So they named the new mountain 龍馬山 Ryubasan.

Ryoma was born in 杉沢集落 the hamlet Sugisawa.
Since it was a small place, he climbed 不動山 Mount Fudosan.
He slept beside the stone Torii of the Shrine.
Since Ryoma spent some time there, the mountain was re-named 龍馬山 (りゅうばさん) Ryubasan.


On 龍馬山 Mound Ryubasan lived a white ryooma 龍馬 Dragon Horse.
Its head was like a dragon, the body like a horse.
It showed up only once in 60 years.
Some of its footprints were in the stones on the way.
The lord of 新庄 Shinjo was suspicious and said this could not be.
He went up the mountain and when the Dragon Horse appeared, he shot it.
Since then, it never showed up again.

. - KAPPA 河童 / かっぱ / カッパ - Legends - .
In a nearby river, 不動様 the Dragon Horse from Mount Fudosan would come to wash its body.
A Kappa was trying to grab its tail.
Instad, the Deity from Fudosan would catch the Kappa.
He said he would let the Kappa go, if he promised not to catch children any more.
After that, people never saw a Kappa in the river.

When 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi walked over 岩動山 Mount Sekidosan,
a special Ryuto Light appeared above an old pine tree
and clouds refering to 大日如来 Dainichi Nyorai appeared.
Therefore Kobo Daishi stayed there for two years and made two statues,
one of Dainichi Nyorai and one of 聖徳太子 Shotoku Taishi.
This is now 広済寺 Temple Kosai-Ji.

In 1675, a man from the village Tawaramura had a dream vision:
Shotoku Taishi came to his side and in the morning walked to the slope 太子坂 Taishizaka.
When he went to the spot and dug in the ground, he found a wooden statue of Shotoku Taishi.
He took the statue home.
One day in summer when it started to rain all of a sudden, he went home from the fields.
The statue had taken the washing from the line and into the house.
Sometimes on an autumn evening, people saw the children play with Shotoku Taishi.

A statue of Shotoku Taishi in the home of a farmer from Tawara town begun to vibrate every night.
It then appeared in the dream of the famer and told him
it wanted to go to 木津村正楽寺 Temple Shoraku-Ji in Kizu village

. ryuuma, ryooma, ryuume 竜馬 / 龍馬 dragon horse .
At 相原神社 the Shrine Aihara Jinja there is a parade of a straw horse.
The legend is told in the records of 桐原八景 Aihara Hakkei.
During the time of 成務天皇 Emperor Seimu (84 - 190) on the eighth day of the second month
a dragon horse was running in the fields.
The village headman caught the dragon horse and offered it to the Emperor.
After the death of the Emperor, the horse flew up to Fujisan.
During the time of 推古天皇 Emperess Suiko (554 - 628)
it left Fujisan and came to Koshu 甲州 - Yamanashi.
The governor of Yamanashi from 曽我 the Soga clan caught it
and offered it to 聖徳太子 Prince Shotoku Taishi.
Shotoku Taishi rode to the sky on the horse for 7 days
before it went to 霊山奥窟 the Ryozen cave.
When Shotoku Taishi died, the horse came to the funeral
and died in front of his grave.

After it had rained for a long time, a burst of lightning fell into the well.
Soon after, 聖徳太子 Prince Shotoku Taishi fell down from the sky.
He used a large rock to place as a lid on the well.
Since then, no more lightning fell down.

Shotoku Taishi no ido 聖徳太子の井戸 the Well of Shotoku Taishi
At the estate of 梅雨理左衛門 Tsuyu Rizaemon in Osaka there is a well
which was dug out by 聖徳太子 Prince Shotoku Taishi.
On the next day after the beginning of the rainy season,
fresh water came out of the well.
At the end of the rainy season, the well dried out.

On a cold winter day, a farmer was shoveling snow, when a child came to help him.
Later he inquired about this child and they say it was 聖徳太子 Shotoku Taishi.

. Amida Nyorai Legends 阿弥陀如来と伝説 .
At 甲州塩の山 Mount Shionoyama (塩ノ山, 556 m)
there was a huge boulder who prevented the proper use of water and worried the farmers.
The main statue of the local temple was 阿弥陀 Amida Nyorai carved by Shotoku Taishi.
The farmers recited the Nenbutsu prayer for two nights and three days for help.
There was a thunderbolt at night and when the farmers looked next morning,
the boulder was split and water came running down.
Since then the mountain was called Retsuishiyama 烈石山 Mountain with a split boulder.

If people go to the Karaneko-zuka mound and ask for bowls for 10 people and trays for 5 people,
they will find them next morning.
If they do not bring them back, they will never get new ones.
During the of 桓武天皇 the Emperor Kanmu Tenno a man called 彌右衛門 Miemon
was the first to bring a cat from China.
When the cat died, he built a mound for it.
Sometimes the name of the cat was written karaneko 空猫 "cat not to be seen".

Rokkakudoo 六角堂 The Rokkakudo Hall
Shotoku Taishi transported a statue of 如意輪 Nyoirin Kannon from Awaji to his place,
when a purple cloud appeared above 杉の霊木 the sacred pine tree near 六角堂 the Rokkakudo Temple Hall.
Later 桓武天皇 the Emperor Kanmu Tenno relocated the capital 平安京 Heiankyo
and the Rokkakudo Temple Hall now stood in the middle of an alley.
The officers wondered if they could relocate the Rokkakudo Temple Hall.
Now a black clound appeared and moved the Hall, so that the road was clear now.

In 1910, a man passed a road along the fields near 六角堂 the Rokkakudo Temple Hall,
when he heard a strange voice singing:
yume no yume koso zazazazaza 夢の夢こそザザザザザ a dream, a dream, zazazazaza
When he came to his sences, he was almost fallen into the field.
The stange voice was gone but now there came sand flowing toward him - バラバラ parapara.
It must have been kawauso 獺魚 a river otter.

The International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken)

A database of yōkai and mystery stories which have been collected from Japanese folklore.
The database is published by International Research Center for Japanese Studies.
The prototype was created on March 19, 2002, and the first live version was released on June 20, 2002.
The project supervisor is Kazuhiko Komatsu (小松和彦), a Japanese folklorist who is a professor of the study of yōkai.

The database includes verbal information, without visual information. Data are collected from:

Akira Takeda (竹田旦) "民俗学関係雑誌文献総覧" 1978
"日本随筆大成" 1975 - 1978
Kunio Yanagita "妖怪名彙"
Books of histories of Japanese local governments.

昔、貧乏で正直な葱売りの男が龍宮から美しい姫を嫁にもらった。
kunishi 国司 the local governor がその妻を奪おうとして無理難題をふっかけたが、最後は姫が大蛇になって国司の首を絞め殺した。
大蛇はそのまま龍宮に帰り、男は元の葱売りに戻って揖請をすごしたという。

kuzu no daija 九頭の大蛇 a huge snake with nine heads
Minamoto no Mitsunaka 源満仲 (912 - 997) had a dream vision to shoot an arrow toward the sky.
When he did so the sky lit up like a flash of lightning and the arrow disappeared in the sky.
The next morning, on advise of an old man, he went to a nearby pond.
The year before, 俵藤太秀郷 Tawara no Tota Hidesato had shot a mukade 百足 centipede with nine heads,
but the spirit of the cenitpede had turned into a huge serpent with nine heads.
The kaburaya 鏑矢 a whistling arrow had hit the serpent in the head and the animal died.

Hachimandake 八幡岳 (1020 m) Mount Hachiman
In the spring of 1338 there was a strong light at night coming from 八幡岳 Mount Hachimandake.
When 西野孫左衛門 Nishino Magozaemon climped up the next day,
he found kaburaya 鏑矢 a whistling arrow and took it home.
His son 孫四郎 Magoshiro later had an oracle telling him to venerate 八幡大明神 Hachiman Daimyojin
and call the mountain 八幡岳 Mount Hachimandake.

. Sarutahiko deity 猿田彦, 猿田彦神 - Sarugami 猿神 Monkey Deity .
Once upon a time 白羽の矢 an arrow with white feathers hit the door of a family
and they had to offer their daughter for a ritual.
But a Yamabushi 山伏 mountain priest came to help.
At the night hour for curses, ushimitsu 牛三, someone came to the home
and begun to dance around the cupboard where the daughter was hiding.
The mountain priest let loose a dog which bit and killed the monster.
When they looked next morning, it was an old monkey.

fushussan 不出産
奥州七戸小川町の弥右衛門 Yauemon の娘・さなは17年前に懐妊し、未だに出産していない。そもそも20年前に結婚した時に、夫婦ともに襟に白羽の矢が立ったという夢を見て懐妊したが、産月になっても出産しなかった。ただ胎児はさなにだけ聞こえるように、不浄の地では生まれたくないといっており、皇城の地を踏まないと生まれないと神夢を見た。
さらに北野天満宮 Kitano Tenmanguに参詣したら程なく生まれるだろうとの神夢を得たという。

平家の落人が白羽の矢で大蛇退治をした。その大蛇が苦しんで3日3晩のたうちまわった場所を、ミカズリ Mikazuri という。

茂庭の湖に大蛇が住み、人年貢をとった。建久3年の年に、金を集めて生贄の娘を那須野ヶ原に求めた。妹を売った人は斎藤実良の家臣今野図書で、主君の父の一周忌の追善のために妹・猿姫を売った。実良は不審に思い事情を聞いて大蛇退治に出かけた。9月19日に稲荷様からいただいた白羽の矢で大蛇を退治した。実良はその功により、伊達家の客として茂庭を頂き、移り住んだ。

天暦年間の事。鬼が瓢岳に棲み付き、村人を苦しめたので勅命で藤原高光が退治にきた。鬼は姿を巧みに隠したので高光は瓢岳と高賀山に6つの社を祀り、虚空蔵菩薩 Kokuzo Bosatsu からお告げと白羽の矢を受けて鬼を射止めた。鬼の首をはねた刀を洗ったら鰻に変じたので、虚空蔵菩薩のお使いとして、この村では鰻を食べない。この鬼の首が念興寺にあり、持ち出すと天が荒れるといわれている。

Around 1480, the Lord of Mure had a dream:
白羽の矢 an arrow with white feathers came flying from the East
and fell down in a forest in the North.
He believed this was a revelation from the Deities.
When he searched for the arrow, he found it at the mountain behind 阿弥陀寺 the Temple Amida-Ji.
The ordered a Shinto Shrine to be built there, 白羽神社 the Shrine Shiraha Jinja.

In 1715 on day 20 of the 8th lunar month, at the 仙洞御所 Sento Imperial Palace

This was seen as an auspicious omen and the emperor wrote a poem about it.

平家の勇士がやって来て、御社を今ある所に移したいといった。景清の築いた城跡が山の上に残っているが、もとは八幡宮 Shrine Hachimangu があった。城郭を構えようとして神に祈祷すると、遷座の許しが出たので、喜んで白羽の矢を射た。矢は今の社の池の中に刺さった。そこに社を造り白羽の矢を神宝の第一とした。

At 矢奈比売神社 the Shrine Yanahime Jinja there was a festival on the 10th day of the 8th lunar month.
白羽の矢 an arrow with white feathers was shot toward the village and where it landed,
the daughter had to become a human sacrifice.
In 1308, on day 9 of the 8th lunar month, an itinerant monk heard the story
and said "This must not be known to シッペイ太郎 / しっぺい太郎 Shippeitaro!".
The villagers went to borrow Shippeitaro and finally got rid of the baboon monster.

. shirohebi / hakuja 白蛇と伝説 Legends about white serpents .
Once a child in 小平集落 the hamlet Kodaira killed a hakuja 白蛇 white serpent
in the garden of an official building.
Soon many members of her family became ill.
When they asked a priest about it, he told them that
the child had killed mamorigami 守り神 the protector deity of the building and was now cursed.
The deity is now venerated as hakuryuu gongen 白龍権現 Hakuryu Gongen, the White Dragon Deity.

The priest at 柳玄寺 the Temple Ryugen-Ji was still very young.
For a special reason he did a fasting ritual for 21 days.
On the last day Hakuryu 白龍 a White Dragon appeared in his dream
and promised to give him more spiritual power and let him have a ritual death.
The priest could now help many people.
When he felt his last days had come, he sat on his table for three months,
not moving, with hands folded in prayer.
On the last day, he ascended to heaven.

. bonshoo 梵鐘 Bonsho Temple Bell Legends .
Once a brave Samurai came to kill 白竜 Hakuryu, a white dragon,
who had been seen wearing a special bonsho 梵鐘 temple bell.
He killed the dragon with an arrow with white feathers.
Then he took the temple bell and offered it to 国分寺 the temple Kokubun-Ji.
The bell made a very mysterious sound and people said,
the spirit of 白竜 Hakuryu, the white dragon was still alive.
When the lord of Takamatsu wanted to bring it to his estate,
the bell kept saying: 国分寺へ戻りたい - I want to go back to Kokubun-Ji.
So the lord gave the bell back to the temple.

They are venerated as 白龍大明神 the Hakuryu Myojin Deity.
In former times there used to be an old enoki 榎 nettle tree
where a shirohebi 白蛇 white serpent lived.
The farmers had built a small sanctuary and venerated the serpent there.
Once there lived many serpents and the farmers had killed many of them.
Thus the serpent had cursed the humans.

A person named 白龍山人 Hakuryu Sennin from Nagasaki has seen 白竜 Hakuryu, a white dragon,
near a well near Takeo station.
The dragon was about 5 meters long, with shining scales.
Its body was white as ice and snow, only its eyes were light black.
After seeing the dragon, the man changed his name.

After Priest 智証大師 Chisho Daishi came back from China, he turned into the South-West direction,
took a water ablution and folded his hands.
When his disciples asked him about the reason, he told them
"There is a fire at 青龍寺 the Temple Shoryu-Ji and I want to help to extinguish the fire."

A Zen-priest named 無因 Mu-In hit the corner of a rock with his staff many times.
The rock burst and water came flowing out. White clouds came up and
seiryuuu 青龍 an Azure dragon came out and moved to heaven.
This is the origin of the Temple name 青龍山瑞泉寺 Seiryuzan Zuisen-Ji.

. 八太郎 Hachitaro and the Lord of 八郎潟 Hachirogata. .
The lord of 十和田湖 Lake Towadako was a large unagi 鰻 eel.
Once a Yamabushi 山伏 mountain priest fought with 八郎太郎 Hachirotaro and regained the land.
On the land he was venerated as Seiryu Gongen 青龍権現 Venerable Seiryu Azure Dragon.
Another version mentions a priest from 三戸郡科町龍現寺 Temple Ryugen-Ji in Sannohe.
The priest shape-shifted into a serpent and drove Hachirotaro away.

Seiryū-ji (青龍寺)
is a Kōyasan Betsuin (affiliate temple) located in Aomori, Aomori Prefecture.
The temple was founded by a Great Acharya Ryuko Oda (織田隆弘),
who later built Shōwa Daibutsu (昭和大仏) in 1984.
Roughly 21.35 meters in height, it is the tallest seated bronze figure of Buddha in Japan.

A Seiryu 青竜 Azure Dragon sometimes brought a light to the hands of the Kannon Statue.
Therefore the temple was named
龍燈山竜華樹院観自在寺 Temple Ryutozan, Ryugeju-In, Kanjizai-Ji.
This Kannon had come from the sea, riding on a deer.
It was also called Kashima Kannon 鹿島観音 Kannon from Kashima.
Kanjizai (観自在) is the name of Avalokitesvara (観音 Kannon Bosatsu)
which is used in the Heart Sutra (般若心経 Hannya Shingyo).

Below the Golden Hall of 四天王寺 the temple Shitenno-Ji there is
the Seiryu-Ike 青竜池 Pond of the Azure dragon.
In former times there was a large pond where 青竜 the Azure Dragon lived.
When building the temple, the pond was filled, but to appease the dragon,
a small pond was left. It became the source of
kamei no mizu 亀井の水, where fresh water from the Turtle Well always flows.

. Chishoo Daishi 智證大師 Chisho Daishi / Enchin 圓珍 . - (814 - 891)
When Enchin went to China, he stayed at 青龍寺 the Chinese Temple Seiryu-Ji.
When he was head priest at 比叡山 Hieizan, he once used his water ladle and threw water in the sky in the Western direction three times.
When his students asked him about it, he told them there was a fire at 青龍寺 the Temple Seiryu-Ji and he wanted to extinguish it.
Next year a man from China came to the temple and told them that during the fire there was suddenly a great rainstorm, extinguishing the fire.
