Tezutsu hand-held fireworks - Toyohashi
Spectacular fireworks having a tradition of more than 400 years are set off at festivals held in various places of the city.
It is said that the fireworks began in the Sengoku period. Because the Mikawa region was the home ground of Ieyasu Tokugawa, regulations on manufacturing and storing gunpowder were not so strict compared to other clans and the fireworks technology developed.
Pillars of fire shoot up as high as 10 meters from the cylinders held by the hanabishu and the scene of sparks scattering and dropping like rain is fantastic. The fireworks can be seen at "Toyohashi Gion Festival" in mid July, "Fire Festival" in early September, and "Hada Festival" in early October.

The pillar of flames of the festival for Yamanokami is sacred and people take it home in the hope it will prevent their house from fire.
If sparks of this fire fall on dried leaves or branches, they will not burn.
If from the top of the mountain the flames of the fire at 伊勢の神島 Kami Island of Ise can be seen, the year will bring a good harvest and bountiful fishing.
