    ryuume 竜馬 "dragon horse"
    Minamoto no Mitsunaka 源満仲 (912 - 997) had been asked by 竜女 Ryujo, a Dragon Lady, to kill a daija 大蛇 huge serpent.
    As a reward he got a ryuuma 竜馬 "dragon horse" with horns.
    Its skull is buried at the temple 普明寺 Fumyo-Ji. The bones are useful for amagoi 雨乞い rain rituals.

    . amagoi 雨乞いと伝説 Legends about rain rituals / Regenzauber .
    At the Shrine in 肥後の真木村 Maki village in Higo the main festival is on the 15th day of the 10th lunar month.
    Even if the day starts out fine, there will be a lot of rain later on.
    If the day starts with clouds, there will be no rain later on.

    備前国 Bizen no Kuni

    amagoi waka 雨乞和歌 Waka poetry and rain rituals
    A Samurai from Bizen no Kuni named 水野義風 Mizuno Gifu was ordered by the village head to write a Waka poem as a rain ritual.
    The villagers were happy, took a copy home and offered it to the 産土神 Ubusunagami, And the rain came soon.
    So to our day when there is a drought, they take out this paper and perform rituals. Then it will rain.

    今立郡 Imadate district 池田町 Ikeda town

    For amagoi 雨乞い a rain ritual people go to Daikoku no Ike 大黒の池 "Lake for Daikoku"and make an offering of a plate with surume スルメ squid, sake 酒 rice wine and kudamono 果物 fruit.
    If the offerings fall into the lake smoothly, it will soon rain.
    At the lake there lives hebi 蛇 a snake.

  5. Legend from Shiga 滋賀県 甲賀市 Koka city 水口町 Minakuchi town
    .
    Behind the Shrine 八坂神社 Yasaka Jinja is Ryuu-ga-mori 竜ヶ森 the Dragon Forest. There stood a huge sugi 杉 cedar tree which 6 people could hardly cover with their arms around it. A dragon lived in this tree. The tree was hit twice by lighting, and at the second time, the Dragon went back to heaven.
    This special tree broke down during the Isewan Typhoon.
    Nearby is a Ryuu-ga-ido 竜ヶ井戸 "Dragon Well" which is used for amagoi 雨乞い rain rituals and prayers.

    .
    Ishigami Sama 石神様
    At 鳰崎 Niozaki there are two hokora 祠 small Shrines, one dedicated to 石神様 Ishigami Sama and one to 白山様 Hakusan Sama.
    At the Hakusan Shrine, amagoi 雨乞い rain rituals are performed. If they do not bring any result, the next rain ritual is performed at the Shrine for Ishigami Sama.

    Shrine Hiyoshi Jinja
    .
    If there is no rain for a long time, people go to 日吉神社 the Hiyoshi Shrine and ask the priest to perform rain rituals.
    If the rain has fallen, they come again to express their gratitude.

  8. Legend from Nagano 下伊那郡 Shimo-Ina district 高森町 Takamori town
    .
    aojishi, aoi shishi 青獅子 blue lion head
    A carver of Buddhist statues had come from Kyoto and asked the temple priest to have him make a statue.
    The priest was suspicious and asked for a lion head.
    The carver took water ablutions under the waterfall and then started to work.
    Finally the lion head was finished, but it was not well done, so he threw it into the waterfall basin.
    The lion head turned all blue and begun to grunt.
    A cooking pot cracked, thunder was heard and a lot of rain fell.
    This was later called nabe-wari 鍋割 "cracking a pot"
    and the blue lion head was used for amagoi 雨乞い rain rituals.

  9. Legend from Nagano 下伊那郡 Shimo-Ina district 天竜村 Tenryu village
    .
    The sunken bell at 釣鐘渕 the river pool Tsuriganefuchi had be pulled out and given to the local temple.
    Since then there had been hideri 日照り a drought and the fields all dried up.
    The villagers brought the bell back to the riverpool and performed a rain ritual.
    It started to rain very soon.

  10. Legend from Kagawa, 綾歌郡 Ayauta district 坂出町 Sakaide town
    .
    . Gyooki Bosatsu 行基菩薩 Gyoki Bosatsu (668 - 749) .
    Saint Gyoki Bosatsu performed exorcist rituals at a mountain, when ryuujo 龍女 a female dragon flew up and away.
    She left a hair ornament to be venerated as an object of worship.
    During a kanbatsu 旱魃 drought, amagoi 雨乞い rain rituals were performed.

    hoogyoku 宝玉 precious jewel
    During a great drought, the head priest of 大智院 the Temple Daichi-In splashed the ink from his suzuri 硯 ink stone on the hoogyoku 宝玉 precious jewel in a special amagoi 雨乞い rain ritual.
    Indeed, soon it begun to rain very strong.

  12. Legend from Kagawa, 坂出市 Sakaide city 金山町 Kanayama town
    . ryuu, ryū 龍 竜 伝説 Ryu - dragon legends .
    At 金山村吉祥寺 the Temple Kichijo-Ji in Kanayama town the priest started fasting before doing
    amagoi 雨乞い a rain ritual. When the time was fulfilled,
    the priest saw a dragon coming out of the moat and goint up to heaven.
    Then a strong rain begun to fall down.
    The temple was later re-named to Ryōkō-in Ryōkō-In 龍光院 Ryuko-In.

  13. Legend from Osaka, 四条畷市 Shijonawate city 南野 Minamino
    At Tatsuoji - Ryubiji 竜尾寺 the Temple Ryuo-Ji (Dragon Tail Temple)
    they keep the tail of a dragon as a special temple treasure.
    Around 730, when the local villagers were suffering from a drought, 行基菩薩 Saint Gyoki Bosatsu held a rain ritual.
    In no time it begun to rain and the tail of a dragon fell from the sky.
    This tail was kept as a special treasure in 竜尾寺 the Temple Ryubi-Ji.

  14. Legend from Hyogo
    .
    The priests of 法泉寺 the Temple Hosen-Ji at the center, all men of the village went to the
    若宮 Wakamiya Shinto Shrine on the nearvy mountain for
    七日七晩祈祷 a seven day, seven night prayer ritual.
    They made a male and a female dragon of straw, folding prayer papers into it.
    On the last day, the dragons left for the sea at 鳴門 Naruto.
    Now a big kame 亀 turtle came out of the sea, black clouds appeared in the sky
    and there was a lot of strong rain.
