The Kumano Kodō (熊野古道)
is a series of ancient pilgrimage routes that crisscross the Kii Hantō, the largest Peninsula of Japan. These sacred trails were and are used for the pilgrimage to the sacred site "Kumano Sanzan" (熊野三山) or the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano:
Kumano Hongū Taisha (熊野本宮大社), Kumano Nachi Taisha (熊野那智大社) and
Kumano Hayatama Taisha (熊野速玉大社).

ReplyDeleteThe Shrine palanquin of 熊野神社 Kumano Jinja, containing the 獅子頭 lion head, is carried to the beach and floated in the water.
Once it floated to the beach at 浜市村 Hamaichi village.
It was picked up by the hunter 八十郎が藤原重光 Fujiware no Shigemitsu. He took it upstream of the river 鳴瀬川 Narusegawa to venerate it.
Since then the fishermen of Hamaichi do shiogori 潮垢離 water ablutions in the sea water.
