But the family became cursed and to make up for it venerated the cat in a small shrine in the garden as
猫神様 Kami of cats
風邪の神様 Kami against the cold

Once a murderer was loading his gun to shoot a girl in front of a cat. The cat hurried out, shapeshifted into the girl using a spinning wheel. However much the murderer shot at her, he did not hit her. The mother-in-law suggested to shoot at the spinning wheel instead and indeed, the cat died.
One should never load a gun in front of a cat.

Legend from Tokyo, Asakusa
.
o-neko sama お猫さま
In Asakusa lived a poor family, making a living by selling vegetables. When the old father got ill, they became even poorer. The father mumbled about the cat, which should be killed and from that day on the cat did not show up any more. The father thought this strange and asked the old man about it. The old man told his son that the cat came every night and lay on the part of his body that was ill. That way he could get some sleep. And soon the ill old man was cured.

tatari 祟り cursed
Once a group of Yamabushi 山伏 mountain priests passed along Mount Ozasadake about 200 years ago, but one of them tonshi 頓死 died suddenly and had a small stone mound made in his memory. An old woman who heard this came to the stone mound, put a kettle on a fire and killed her own kuroneko 黒猫 black cat by boiling it. Then she cut her tongue and died too. Later the curse of this old woman killed more mountain priests there.

At the Temple 西林院 Seirin-In in Omaezaki there lived a monk who had once helped a cat.
The cat kept living at the temple.
Once a monk was taking a nap on the veranda and the cat was near, looking at the garden.
A cat from the neighbourhood came and asked the temple cat to come with it make 伊勢参り a pilgrimage to Ise.
The monk thought this was strange.
That night he heard a strange noise from the ceiling.
An unsui 雲水 an itinerant monk who stayed at the temple also woke up from the noise.
When he checket the ceiling next morning, he found the temple cat and the neighbourL's cat laying in their blood.
And a mouse waring the robes of an Unsui was dead on the floor.
