The ship of 日比五郎左衛門 Hibi Gorozaemon had been lost at see and drifted for a long time. Then they saw the shapes of a mountain on an island. They prayed with all their heart to the Shinbutsu and indeed they came close to the island and were saved.

shinbutsu no kago 神仏の加護 divine protection of the Shinbutsu
When someone makes a vow (gankake 願掛け), prays to the Shinbutsu for healing and gets well again, he has to go back and end the vow in a thank-you ritual. This is especially important for the healing of a very difficult disease.
A red and white paper-flower offering is made and hung on a circle of bamboo. In the middle a white handfan (白扇) with the name of the person is hung in the circle.
This offering is called hanamidori 花みどり.
