He took some surume スルメ squid into his hand and walked on. When another person came from the other side, the spook stopped immediately.

Advise of not getting ill by an epidemic 流行病にかからない俗信:
Carry ninniku ニンニク garlic and surume スルメ squid in a bag when walking around.
Hanging garlic, ノビル・アジサイ・スベリヒユなど at the front door.
Write the letter for uma 馬 horse three times on paper and hang it upside down at the front door.
Write 流行神様お通りください」 "God of the Epidemic, please pass by this home" and hang it upside down at the front door.
