yonaki ishi 夜泣き石 / 夜泣石 stone crying at night
Once upon a time
a disciple of 日蓮上人 Saint Nichiren visited Hakodate.
At night he could hear the voice of a woman crying all night.
Well, in the past there had been a vicious Samurai who killed
a woman and her baby and buried the two in front of the stone.
Since then it begun to cry at night.
In 1816, three stone masons who had carved the inscription, died.
