1. A general term for traditional Japanese (as opposed to Western-style) clothing.
2. A general term for any formal outer garments worn by Buddhist monks in Japan; also called dharma robes (hōe 法衣).
3. A Chinese-style robe that is worn by Buddhist monks in East Asia; also called a long robe (jikitotsu 直裰).
The koromo has long sleeves and a collar and is tied by a sash or belt (obi 帶) around the waist. Zen monks in Japan wear a Japanese-style long cotton kimono (yukata 浴衣) under the koromo, with a collared white undershirt (juban 襦袢) under the kimono. The ceremonial kesa, a vestige of the upper robe that covered one shoulder of Buddhist monks in India, is worn over the koromo. Formally dressed Zen monks thus wear two layers of traditional Japanese clothing (kimono), covered by a Chinese Buddhist long robe (koromo), which is topped by an Indian Buddhist robe (kesa).

Once a woman was cutting weeds at the river pool were they often pick bracken
She saw 小僧 a young temple acolyte with a sedge hat coming from the river.
This must be the spirit of the bracken, she thought and swung the hatched in a circle. The young acolyte jumped in astonishment, turned into a pebble and fell back into the river.

Once a saotome 早乙女 rice-planting maiden was singing a song, bending toward the direction of 久保田の天狗嶽 Mount Tengudake at Kubota.
The Tengu came close and wanted to imitate the song, but could not sing as beautiful as the maiden.
The Tengu got angry and since then during the rice-planting season it always rains.

At 氷室 Himuro was a person who could use Ninja tricks.
He once passed along a field where women were planting rice. He said
saotome o odorasete miyoo 早乙女を躍らせてみよう "Let us make the Saotome women dance!"
He threw some tree leaves on the ground and the women bagun to dance.

Tentoo sama no bachi 天道様の罰 the punishment of the Sun
The 湖山長者 rich man from Koyama always employed many Saotome to have his fields planted in just one day.
In one year during the time of rice planting, a mother monkey came along with his baby head-down on her back. The Saotome women looked at her for a long time and could not finish all the fields on this day.
So the rich man took his hand fan and pointed it toward the sun, blowing it away for just one hour longer to finish the rice planting.
His fields were planted, but as a punishment the Sun now sent water to flood it all in one day and make a lake out of it.

One year during the rice-planting season, a huge serpent had swallowed all the Saotome girls, but the kushi櫛 comb of one girl got stuck in her throat and she died.
In memory of this event the villagers built the shrine 櫛田神社 Kushida Jinja.

monogusa taroo 物ぐさ太郎 "Do-Nothing-Taro" and his kitsune nyooboo 狐女房 fox wive
The wife of Monogusa Taro had died and he had to care for the fields alone. Among the Saotome he had hired there was one who worked very hard, like four or five persons at once.
He took her as his wife and soon they had a son. When the boy was three years old, the woman suddenly turned into a fox and left the home.
Now Monogusa Taro had to take care of the child while dilligently doing his farm work. He soon became rich and prosperous.
The Fox-Child lived to the ripe age of 80 years and his descendants all became rich farmers.

matamegane 股めがね peeking through the legs
The fields for planting in one day had been decided for each Saotome.
In the evening one girl had almost finished and bend her head down to peek through her legs 　- to see that a big part was still unfinished.
She was quite surprized that soooo much was still not done that she fell down and died on the spot.
Since then, this field is called Saotomeda 早乙女田 field of the rice-planting maiden.

自宅庭の手水鉢近くに茂る葉蘭から焔が３尺ほど燃え上がっていたとき、眼光尋常でない大男が隣家より塀を飛び越えて来て、槍を振り回した。目を閉じて１時間ほどすると、焔も大男もいなくなっていた。この正体は邪気とそれに破られて乱心した隣家の主人であった。これが俗にいう通り悪魔であろう。

In each region of the Shimabara Peninsula many legends about giants have been told. The story about the kind and friendly giant Misogoro is one of them.
The statue of Misogoro was built based on this old story passed down in this area.
The statue is carried on a truck and is displayed in a parade that goes down the old shopping street of Nishi Arie.
At the festival, many events related to Somen noodles are held such as a fancy-dress parade, somen tasting, and a fast-eating of somen contest. Moreover, the event offers an exhibition and sale having not only Tenobe Somen boodle, but also locally harvested crops and fishery products.

hitodama human soul legends

In Japanese folklore, Hitodama (Japanese 人魂; meaning "human soul") are balls of fire that mainly float in the middle of night.
They are said to be "souls of the dead that have separated from their bodies," which is where their name comes from.
- Hitodama are mentioned in literature from ancient times. In the Man'yōshū, there is the following poem:
When you are alone and meet the complete blueness of a hitodama,
you would naturally think of it as the sorrow on a rainy night.

They are frequently confused with onibi and kitsunebi, but since hitodama are considered to be the "appearance of souls that have left the body and fly through the air," they are strictly speaking a different general idea.
Concerning their shape and nature,
there are common features throughout Japan, but some differences could also be seen depending on the area. They fly crawling along at an elevation that is not very high. They have a color that is blue, orange, or red, and also have a tail, but it can either be short or long. There are also a few that have been seen during daytime.
In the Okinawa Prefecture,
hitodama are called "tamagai", and in Nakijin, they are said to appear before a child is born and in some areas are also said to be mysterious flames that drive off humans to death.
In Kawakami, Inba District, Chiba Prefecture,
(now Yachimata), hitodama are called "tamase," and are said to come out of the body 2 or 3 days after a human dies, and go toward temples or people they have a deep relation with and are said to make a great sound in storm shutters and gardens, but it is said that this sound can only be heard by those who have a deep relation with the spirit. Also, for those who have not seen a tamase by the time they are 28 years of age, a tamase would come towards them saying "let's meet, let's meet (aimashou, aimashou)" so even those who have not seen one when they are 28 years old will pretend to have seen one.

On the last day of the Old Year people can see many soul fires hovering over the waves in the sea. Sometimes there are more soul fires on the other side of the bay, sometimes they come together and over around. Eventually they disappear at the Shrine 常宮神社 Jogu Jinja.
The Dragon, an incarnation of 海神 Watatsumi, the Deity of the Sea, is said to become a female and go to meet its male counterpart.

Kitō are magico-religious invocations of the powers of a wide range of Shintō and Buddhist deities in hope of divine favor or protection. The ritual is also referred to as kinen, kigan, or kisei ; it also shares the same meaning as inori and nomi.
In ancient times, invocations and offerings were made to shrines to request safety, good weather, and bountiful harvests throughout the realm. Invocations of such highly public nature formed the original purpose of Shintō worship.
On the other hand, invocations made for the private benefit of individuals (shikitō and shikigan) are thought to have derived from "yin-yang exorcism" (onmyō harai) rites by ying-yang diviners (onmyōji ) in the mid-Heian period.
The integration of such rituals into the Shintō faith in the late Heian period has been attributed to the activities of invocation ritualists (okitōshi, o-kitōshi), who are precursors of the medieval oshi. Moreover, influenced by the practice of reaching empowerment through ritual union with the deity (kajikitō) of esoteric Buddhism and by yin-yang exorcism rites, Yoshida Shintō adapted the esoteric Buddhist goma rite and created the "Shintō goma", the "elemental Shinto ceremony" (sōgen gyōji), and a wide variety of other prayer rituals.
At present, shrine priests (shinshoku) conduct shikitō and shikigan invocations for diverse aims, such as easy childbirth, recovery from illness, longevity, and the prosperity of descendants.
Invocation rituals that are personally performed by individuals, without the intervention of shinshoku, are popular, including the "100 pilgrimages" (hyakudo mōde; see ohyakudo), the "1,000 shrine pilgrimage" (senja mōde, see also senja fuda), and "temporary seclusion at a shrine for making an invocation" (sanrō ).

Once on the day of 庚申 Koshin the child of a certain family did not come home at night. Three days (months) later they found some of her cloths and some hair at an old temple near 古坊 Furubo. They showed them to カンパラ（祈祷師), Ganbara, a diviner at Soja. He found that キシオジン Kishiojin (the name of the deity in the local dialect) had taken her away.
The house of her family was built along a road where the Tengu pass.
(Other sources say a キシオジンの通り筋 road where Kishiojin passes.)
Also called Kishiojin-suji キシオジン筋.

kuda くだ Kuda (Yokai fox-like animal)
Kuda, a green bamboo tube where cooked rice is kept. When people hit it, the KUDA comes out and the family where this happens will become rich and have a lot of silk worms.
A home with many KUDA is blessed, but if there are too much, they will eat too much and eventually the family will become poor and its members become ill.
So the family has to call for an exorcist 祈祷師, a Shinto priest, and have rituals performed.

In some very rural areas there are some kind of 祈祷師 exorcists for the Kappa, Gaappa, ガーッパおとしの神さん Gaappa otoshi no kami san. They can remove a Gaappa if he possesses a human by beating the Shaman drum, swinging the ritual wand 御幣 and chanting exorcist Sutras.

They belong to the seven sub-shrines of 日吉大社 Hiyoshi Taisha.

The origin of this shrine is not quite clear.
In 982, 佐々木成頼 Sasaki Nariyori ordered the construction of the 日吉十禅師 Juzenji of Hiyoshi.
This shrine flourished as the protector shrine of the Sasaki clan in 近江国 Omi (now Shiga prefecture).
The shrine was destructed by Oda Nobunaga, but later rebuild.
In 1870, it was named 十禅師社 Juzenji Shrine

Hiyoshi Taisha
is dedicated to Sanno Gongen, the deity of Mount Hiei, and dates back to 806. The shrine is located at the base of the mountain in Sakamoto near the shores of Lake Biwa. Because of its proximity to Hieizan, it has always been associated with Enryaku-ji. The shrine was destroyed in 1571 when Nobunaga eliminated the Enryaku-ji monks, but it was rebuilt soon after.

Sennin Kyotai Osho

After Chisho's arrival, Kyotai went into a cave and did not come out again.
Later Chisho Daishi put up a stone memorial on the cave.

Since olden times, people who come here to become a monk have their hair cut and offer it on the altar of this hall.

He was a strange old man, living in the Early Heian period.
Around (859-877) he sold white chopsticks in the streets of Kyoto. He always seemed to be about 70 years. After his death his body was buried in the earth.
But a few years later people saw him, clad like a monk, reading the 法華経 Hoke-Kyo Sutra

日本の仙人37人を解説した『本朝神仙記伝』（平安時代後期の漢学者大江匡房（おおえのまさふさ）撰録）には、
「是全く孫右衛門が、熟眠の場なるを知らず、草を刈て驚かせし故に、斯る変を示したるものならんと、人々語り伝えしとなん。今も時として姿を顕はすことあり。村人恐れて、孫右衛門天狗といふとぞ」とあります。
