The golden rooster in the possesion of a Rokubu pilgrim and a box with a mosquito net that could change its size according to the room, it was so precious to the family where he stayed over night at the end of the year, they killed him in a riverpool.
The family now had to suffer the curse of the Rokubu. Whenever they pounded mochi 餅 rice cakes, there was fresh blood in it, dripping down from the ceiling and from the leg of the Rokubu pilgrim hanging there.
Then came a golden rooster and ate all the rice from their storage. The rooster then took off with the eerie laughter of the Rokubu.
The family had even more misfortune and finally they built a grave for the Rokubu to appease his soul.

Hakusan-jinya Shrine, which is also the origin of the area name, was an enshrinement of Kaga Hakusan's Hakusan-jinja Shrine and the village shrine for Koishikawa. The shrine flourished as the major shrine for worship of Hakusan in Edo. T
he Hakusan-jinja Shrine was relocated to its present position when 5代将軍綱吉 the 5th Shogun Tsunayoshi was the head of the Tatebayashi Clan, and the Koishikawa Goten (a stately mansion at Koishikawa, also known as Hakusan Goten) was constructed at the site of the ruins. The mansion drew water from the Sen-kawa River and was surrounded by a moat and was said to have been a very picturesque site.
After the death of Tsunayoshi, the residence was abandoned, and in 貞享年間 the Jokyo Era (1684-88), the 小石川薬園 Koishikawa Yakuen (a garden for medicinal herbs) was established on the site. At present the site is The University of Tokyo affiliated Koishikawa Botanical Gardens.
The Nakasendo Highway branch off of the Nikko Highway at 駒込追分 Komagome-Oiwake passed through Hakusan, and the area was commonly called
It is said this is because the sound of a bird crying was heard every morning in 下総古河藩下屋敷 the Shimosa Koga Clan villa, and when the location the bird cry was heard from was dug up, 金の鶏 a golden rooster was found.

Sugoroku (双六) refers to two different forms of Japanese board game, one similar to western backgammon and the other similar to western Snakes and ladders. Sugoroku plays identically to backgammon (it even has the same starting position), except for the following differences:
Doubles are not special. If a player rolls doubles, each die still counts only once.
There is no "bearing off". The goal is to move all of one's men to within the last six spaces of the board.
There is no doubling cube.
It is not permitted to form a prime of six contiguous points to obstruct one's opponent.
The game is thought to have been introduced from China (where it was known as Shuanglu) into Japan in the sixth century. There are pictures and a cursory description of the rules at
http://www.cultural-china.com/chinaWH/html/en/11Kaleidoscope2118.html
It is known that in the centuries following the game's introduction into Japan it was made illegal several times, most prominently in 689 and 754. This is because the simple and luck-based nature of sugoroku made it an ideal gambling game. This version of sugoroku and records of playing for gambling continuously appeared until early Edo era. In early Edo-era, a new and quick gambling game called Hanchō (半丁) appeared and using sugoroku for gambling quickly dwindled.
This variant of the backgammon family has died out in most other countries, but it is still popular in Japan, partially due to a boost caused by the inclusion of a free Sugoroku board with the first issue of the newspaper Kingu (in 1925) which sold 740,000 copies.
A simpler sugoroku, with the similar rules as Snakes and ladders appeared as early as late 13th century and helped by the cheap and elaborate wooden block printing technology of Edo period, it became a popular game. Thousands of variations of boards were made with pictures and themes from religion, political, actors, and even adult material. In Meiji and later period, this variation of game remained popular often included as a game in kid-oriented magazines.
In 1968, Takara introduced Jinsei Game (人生ゲーム Jinsei Gēmu) as a Japanese version of The Game of Life and this became an instant hit by using a roulette instead of dice and by offering alternative goals beside quickly reaching the goal. This game was periodically updated introducing many timely topics and sold over 10 million sets to date. In the electric gaming genre, Momotaro Dentetsu series is the most popular computer sugoroku game in Japan.

Kobo Daishi got so angry that he turned all the wood for the temple hall into stones and boulders. This is the origin of natural stone formation, looking like pieces of wood.

At 双六の岩波橋 the bridge Iwanamibashi at Sugoroku there is a rock formation looking like a game board for the game Sugoroku ( 双六の盤).
Once some Amanojaku collected rocks from a mountain in the West to make a board to play Sugoroku. The one who lost the game got angry and threw the bord far away, where it hit a stone cliff, dissolved into many small stones and is still now at the side of the river, called 賽の淵 Sai no Fuchi.
This is the origin of the name of this small village, Sugoroku.
and
Amanojaku to Tenjin
This is another version of the above, where Amanojaku and Tenjin played a game of Sugoroku. When Amanojaku cheated to win, Tenjin got angry and threw the board away. The dice they had used became the stone formation Sai ga Fuchi サイが渕 (same as the Sai no Fuchi above).
Once a gropu of professional gamblers made fun of this story and peed on the rocks.
Suddenly the weather turned wild, it began to snow and all the crops of the year were lost.
The gamblers were arrested, tortured and finally died of mental disorders.

Sugoroku for Newly Selected Famous Sake (Shinsen Meishu Sugoroku)
This work introduces 80 brands of Japanese sake in the form of a sugoroku. In the end of the Edo period, the number of sake brands increased and we can find those that are still produced today such as "Hakushika" and "Shirayuki".
In the middle of the Edo period, sake brewing became a big industry. In line with the development of maritime traffic and establishment of wholesale dealers, a large amount of sake produced in Nada and Itami was loaded into ships, transported to Edo as "kudarizake", and gained popularity among general public.
Baisotei Gengyo was a famous calligrapher and painter. Originally, he helped his family business of kyojiya who mounted calligraphy works and paintings on scrolls and books but later worked exclusively in creating calligraphic works and paintings and also producing block copy for novels. He also contributed to the establishment of typography by making block copy in katakana form.

Sugoroku for Success in the First Sale of the New Year
(Hatsuakinai Shusse Sugoroku
by Kosanba and painted by Utagawa Kuniteru 1854
This is a Sugoroku (a Japanese boardgame similar to western Snakes and Ladders) of the lineup of products sold at the cosmetics store founded by a popular novelist, Shikitei Sanba and was succeeded by his son, 小三馬 Kosanba. The prices are also displayed.
The Seven Gods of Good Fortune are depicted on this Sugoroku, and thus, this work is assumed to be a New Year's gift distributed as a form of advertisment.
Shikitei Sanba is famous as the author of "Ukiyo-buro" and "Ukiyo-doko", which are representative of the comic novels that were popular in the late Edo period. He opened a fancy goods store that deal in cosmetics in Nihonbashi and brought prosperity to his business.
In his own novel, Sanba cleverly incorporated advertising by writing a story in which a character in the novel became beautiful by using the products sold at Sanba's store. In particular, "Edo no Mizu (Water of Edo)" sold well, and it can be found on the extreme right at the top of the sugoroku (Japanese board game similar to western Snakes and Ladders) introduced here.

Plum Series: Beautiful Customs Sugoroku (Ume-zukushi Kichirei Sugoroku)
Painted by Hanabusa Icchō 1765
This is a print related to haikai called "Haikai Ichimai Zuri."
Such handouts often had pictures and most of them were distributed amongst haiku poets. This work is in the form of a sugoroku is full of ingenious ideas, and is very attractive to players.
In the left side of the page, you can find the letters of "Shun Kyō," which were haikai composed by fellow haikai members at a New Year's meeting, collected as a booklet or a piece of paper, printed, and then presented to each other.
This work is a kind of sugoroku consisting of "Shun Kyo" by the members belonging to the Edo-za Haikai whose main member was Sekijukan Shūkoku (1711 to 1796) who was active as a haiku poet in the middle of Edo period. The theme of this meeting seemed to be a plum blossoms and thus the sugoroku (Japanese board game similar to western Snakes and Ladders) was made up of 29 sections full of plum blossoms starting at "Kōbunboku", another name for plum.
Edo-za, a school of haikai, was established mainly by Takarai Kikaku, a follower of Bashō, after his death and placed more emphasis on the witty remarks of haikai.

Ninomiya Kyudayu was looking for a lodging in Miyagi (former 日向国 Hyuga no Kuni) and one family let them in.
But the head of the house was ill. There were his two daughters, with serpents wrapped around their neck playing 双六 Sugoroku.
The head of the house explained that the two were possessed, and if one would fear the serpent, the animal would strangle it. If both would fear the serpent, they would both be strangled.
Kyudayu left the home next morning saying thanks. When he came back a few days later, the house was gone and there was only a riverpool.
The other villagers told him that there had been an earthquake and flooding and the home was destroyed.

Jishin no Ran 壬申の乱 Jishin war
civil war, “War of the Year of the Monkey", Jinshin rebellion
Emperor Tenmu Tenno
- quote -
a succession dispute in Japan which broke out in 672 following the death of 天智天皇 Emperor Tenji.
The name refers to the jinshin (壬申) or ninth year of the sixty-year Jikkan Jūnishi calendrical cycle, corresponding to the Western year 673.
Tenji had originally designated his brother, Prince Ōama, as his successor, but later changed his mind in favor of his son, 大友皇子 Prince Ōtomo / 大伴 Otomo. In the course of the violence that erupted as a result of factional rivalries, Ōtomo, having taken the throne as Emperor, took his own life after reigning for less than a year.
His uncle Ōama then succeeded to the throne as the Emperor Tenmu.
- Background -
Emperor Tenji ascended to the throne and set up a capital at Ōmi-Ōtsu (currently Ōtsu city, Shiga Prefecture). He made his best efforts for the foundation of a strong country, imitating the Tang Dynasty in China, importing the Tangs' culture, architecture and political systems. Japan had to pretend to have as much power as Tang because if Japan were regarded as weak, it was feared that the Tang might invade and conquer the country.
The next thing Tenji needed to do was to secure his successor. His Empress-consort was Yamato-hime but there were no children between the two. He had to find the right man from the sons of non-Imperial wives. Prince Takeru was the first son but he was mute by nature and died when he was seven years old. Prince Ōtomo was the next prince of the Emperor. He was a hard worker, and was very clever and intellectual. He had enough ability to be the next Emperor.
Although Ōtomo was almost perfect, his mother was of low birth. She was from the rural area landlord's family and was not Imperial-Household-born. This was a great disadvantage in considering Ōtomo to ascend to the throne.
At the same time, a younger brother of the Emperor Tenji's was as excellent as Ōtomo. He, Prince Ōama, had almost the same fitness as the Emperor, except that he was younger. His reputation was much greater than Ōtomo because he was of higher birth and was more suitable to be the next Emperor.
This was a major cause of the trouble to come.
In 670, the Emperor Tenji got sick. He realized that he couldn't live long, and he wished that, after his death, the Imperial Dynasty would pass to his son, Prince Ōtomo. Because Ōtomo's greatest rival was Ōama, the Emperor attempted to drive Ōama away. He invited the prince to his bedroom and asked if Ōama had an intention to take the throne.
If Ōama answered yes, the Emperor would have arrested and punished him as a traitor. Prince Ōama was clever enough to know his trick and answered that he had no will to succeed the throne and he wanted Ōtomo to be the next Emperor. He added that he wanted to be a monk instead of inheriting the throne and would retire to a temple in Yoshino. Because there were no reasons to punish Ōama any longer, the Emperor accepted the prince's proposal. Ōama went down to Yoshino the next day and became a monk.
The Emperor declared that Ōtomo was the next Emperor. Ōtomo summoned six subjects to the Emperor's bedroom and made them swear to help him in front of the Emperor. The Emperor nodded, and several days later he died.
.....
Prince Ōama pretended to be a monk at the temple in Yoshino, but he was looking for a chance to rise a rebellion against Ōtomo and to drive him away. He secretly collected weapons and soldiers to prepare for the coup-d'etat. In the seventh month of 672, he departed Yoshino and headed for the Palace in Ōtsu where the new Emperor Ōtomo was.

Ooama no Ooji, Ōama no ōji 大海人皇子 Prince Oama - 天武天皇 Tenmu Tenno
(c. 631-686)
Tenmu - the 40th emperor of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession.
Tenmu's reign lasted from 673 until his death in 686.
Emperor Tenmu is the first monarch of Japan, to whom the title Tennō (Emperor of Japan) was assigned contemporaneously — not only by later generations.
Tenmu had many children, including his crown prince Kusakabe.
..... In 671 Tenmu felt himself to be in danger and volunteered to resign the office of crown prince to become a monk. He moved to the mountains in Yoshino, Yamato Province (now Yoshino, Nara), officially for reasons of seclusion.
..... Tenmu assembled an army and marched from Yoshino to the east, to attack the capital of Omikyō in a counterclockwise movement. He left Yoshino with about 30 soldiers, but at the end of his march there were 30000. They marched through Yamato, Iga and Mino Provinces to threaten Omikyō in the adjacent province.
The army of Tenmu and the army of the young Emperor Kōbun fought in the northwestern part of Mino (nowadays Sekigahara, Gifu). Tenmu's army won and Kōbun committed suicide, an incident known as the Jinshin War.
..... As might be expected, Emperor Tenmu was no less active than former-Emperor Tenji in improving the Taika military institutions. Tenmu's reign brought many changes, such as:
(1) a centralized war department was organized;
(2) the defenses of the Inner Country near the Capital were strengthened;
(3) forts and castles were built near Capital and in the western parts of Honshū—and in Kyushu;
(4) troops were reviewed; and all provincial governors were ordered to complete the collection of arms and to study tactics.
..... In 675 Emperor Tenmu banned the consumption of animal meat (horse, cattle, dogs, monkeys, birds), due to the influence of Buddhism.
..... Emperor Tenmu commissioned the "Kojiki" to be the official history of Japan in order to help strengthen imperial rule. It was completed in 712 and the "Nihon Shoki" ("Chronicles of Japan"), another manuscript of myths and legends was compiled in 720.
