. Inari 稲荷と伝説 Legends about the Inari Fox Deity .

高蔵坊狐 Takakurabo Kitsune Fox at the temple 長寿寺 Choju-Ji
The priest 高蔵坊 Takakura Bo of temple Choju-Ji wanted to build a new main hall. The 老狐 old fox who lived in the temple compound wanted to help. He shape-shifted into priest Takakura and begun preaching at crossroads and along the highways:
"I am the priest of the temple Choju-Ji. The Kannon statue of our temple is especially powerful and grants wishes ... "
Many people heard this and came to visit the temple, giving money offerings and the hall could finally be built.
People called the old fox now 高蔵坊狐 Takakurabo Kitsune and when he died he was venerated as the deity 高蔵坊稲荷 Takakura-Bo Inari.

A Tanuki named Tateishi lived along the highway and often shape-shifted into humans or played tricks on them.
One day a female fish peddler came along. She wanted to cross a river and lifted her skirt to pass through the water. But for some reason she could not cross it. When other people called her, she realized she was standing in a field and all the fish of her basket had gone.

The husband of 白石サカヨ Shiraishi Sakayo was carrying fish from the port of 平潟港 Hiragata. After passing a bridge and a mountain pass, he came to the 街道 Kaido highway. Just there a fox usually appeared and insulted him. The man then shouted:
"I will give one fish to 乙姫 Princess Otohime down the river!" and threw one piece of maguro 鰹 tuna fish down the valley.
If he did this, the fox would leave him in peace.
Another man who heard this story put on a white tenugui 手拭い hand towel to look like a woman, went down the river and got the tuna fish.

West of the swamp 化女沼 Kejonuma lived a rich person. He had a beautiful daughter and the rich lord of a manor wanted her as his wife. He refused, but he was punished and had to leave the village, so he went to 最上 Mogami. The servants stood by the highway roadside as he passed. His daughter took a purse with money and jumped into the swamp. All the fish in the swamp went with her and swam to Mogami, where there is now a small pond. She had some red lacquer plates which she could not take. They are still in the swamp and if horses walk nearby, their hooves may turn red from the lacquer.

Kejyonuma Dam (Japanese: 化女沼ダム) is an earthen dam in the city of Ōsaki, Miyagi Prefecture, completed in 1995.
The dam crosses the Tajiri River, a branch of the Kitakami River and utilises the basin of a pre-existing natural lake.
A 34 hectare portion of the wetlands at Lake Kejyonuma has been protected since October 2008 as a Ramsar site in Japan.

. okuri ookami 送り狼 "a wolf following someone" .
Once the kannushi 神主 Shinto priest from 七村 Nanamura was accompanied by a wolf on his way home, but the animal suddenly bit into his sleeve and since he could not get rid of it, he was taken to the top of the mountain. The wolf dug a hole there and stuffed the priest inside to hide him.
A short while later a thousand wild wolves passed the highway in a parade.
Thus the kind wolf had saved the priest.

Kaido 街道と伝説 Legends about the old Kaido highways

- Introduction -

Japan developed a nationwide network of roads and highways already in the 7th century to carry things on foot, horseback, and wheeled traffic and to transport goods between towns and villages, the sea and the mountain communities.
The major roads, called Kaido, started from the old capital in Kyoto.

Also called Ishikawa Kaido 石川街道
From いわき市 Iwaki city in Fukushima to 石川町 Ishikawa town.
It connected 白河 Shirakawa, 棚倉 Tanagura and 須賀川 Sukawata from the 中通り inland Road with 平 Taira and 小名浜 Onahama on the 浜通り Hamadori coastal road.

御斎所峠（ごさいしょとうげ） Gosaisho Toge Pass, more than 1770 m high.
located in Fukushima 福島県いわき市遠野町根岸－いわき市田人町（たびとまち）才鉢（さいばち）

. bakeneko 化け猫, 化猫 a monster cat .
The Ishikawa Kaido was crossing the pass ごさんしょ峠 / 御斎所峠 Gosansho Toge. On its top was a small hut to use in emergencies, where an old couple lived.
They made their cat kill people and took their money.
One day a medicine merchant from 須賀川 Sukagawa came to stay. He was saved by a kamo 鴨 duck from the malicious cat.
When the old couple found out that the cat could not kill the merchant, they took it and banged its head with a metal pipe stick. The cat bit the two in their throats and killed them.
Then the cat gave all the money to the merchant and left. He soon became the richest merchant in Sukagawa and venerated the cat as his protector deity.

In 常陸国の麻生の里 the area of Asao in the old Hitachi domaine there are seven roads.
Once a samurai walked on the Hyakuri Kaido in the evening, when he saw a noble woman with long hair walk in front of him. The two walked together for a while, but then he took out his sword and killed her.
When the farmers went to the place next morning, they found an old Tanuki with long hair dead on the road.

Kannon Sama 観音様
At 森田 Morita there is a statue of Kannon Bosatsu.
In former times it had been at 山田宿坊沢連 Yamada Shukubo Sore.
One night the statue appeared in the dream of the priest and told him she would like to go to 森田 Morita, a little bit further along the 千坊寺街道 Senboji Kaido at 富崎 Tomisaki.
Next morning he took the statue and was on his way when he met some villagers of Morita of the Kaido and handed thme the statue.
The statue is now a 国宝 National Treasure, placed in 森田の観音堂 the Kannon Hall of Morita.

源頼光 Minamoto no Yorimitsu (948 - 1021) wanted to kill demons fro Oeyama and was on his way, clad as a yamabushi 山伏 mountain priest, walking along the Wada Kaido.
At the village of 上川口村 Kamikawaguchi he asked a farmer named 孫八 Magohachi to show him the way. He was looking for the home of the local demon. On the way he met the deity 三貴神 Sankishi / Sankishin, who let him to the Shrine 鬼獄稲荷神社 Ontake Inari Jinja in 大江山 Oeyama. There he made a vow to fight the demon with 鬼毒酒 poisonous Sake and finally could kill the Demon.

Wadajuku 和田宿 is the the name of the 28th postal station in Nagano, along the 中山道 Nakasendo Highway.

Form 平湯峠 the pass Hirayu Toge to Hirose three is a 尾根 ridge, where since olden times something strange is passing at night.
Once a farmer wanted to find out and went there with some friends and stayed the night over there.
Suddenly there were about 12 people passing their pillow, saying
"Today we ate some rice offerings for the Buddha, so we will not harm you."

歌川豊重 Utagawa Yoshikazu - active 1850-1870

Once there was a couple wanting to have a child. They went to 弁財天 the Benzaiten Shrine every day to pray. One morning there was a stone beside the pillow of the woman and she could get pregnant. This child was the torame 虎女 "Tiger Woman". As the girl grow up, the stone beside the pillow begun to get bigger too.

Here is another story, about the woman 虎御前 Tora Gozen.

This stone is also called the 十郎の身代り石 the substitute stone of Juro
It relates to the story of 曽我物語 the Soga revenge, who fought here against 工藤祐経 Kudo Sugetsune. Remains of the imprint of arrow heads are seen on the stone. Also the cut of a large sword can be seen.

aobozu priest legends

Aobōzu (青坊主 Blue Priest)
are a type of Japanese yōkai (folk legend ghosts) that appear in 18th-century artist Toriyama Sekien's book Gazu Hyakki Yakō.
The aobōzu is depicted in the Gazu Hyakki Yakō as a one-eyed Buddhist priest standing next to a thatched hut, however as there is no explanation of the image, the aobōzu's specific characteristics remain unknown.
It is believed that the aobōzu is the direct inspiration for the one-eyed priest hitotsume-kozō that is present in many yōkai drawings, such as Sawaki Suushi's Hyakkai-Zukan published in 1737. There is also a theory that because the kanji ao (青) in its name also means inexperienced, it was depicted as a priest who has not studied enough.

Unfortunately very little is known about this yokai. Toriyama Sekien’s illustration came with not a single word of description other than the name. From its name, we can glean a little bit of information; the word ao 青 means blue or green, and can denote immaturity and inexperience (just as green does in English). Another well-known yokai — ao-nyōbō — uses this color in a similar manner. In fact, as Toriyama’s original illustration was black-and-white, it may even be that he never intended this yokai to be colored blue or green, but rather just meant it as a mockery of what he saw as a corrupt and unskilled priesthood (bōzu = priest). Nonetheless, thanks to its name, it is usually depicted in a sickly shade of ao.
The fact that ao-bōzu has only one eye draws a strong parallel with another yokai, the hitotsume-kozō.
He also bears a strong resemblance to the one-eyed hitotsume-nyūdō.

- - - - - There are a few local legends from various regions about ao-bōzu:
The most well-known legend comes from Shizuoka.
It is said that ao-bōzu appear on spring evenings at sunset in the wheat and barley fields. The transition from night to day is a popular theme in the tradition of in’yō magic (known as ying yang in Chinese). Further, the still blue-green leaves of the young barley also have powerful connections to in’yō sorcery. Children who go running and playing through the fields in the evening might be snatched up and taken away by an ao-bōzu summoned by this bizarre magical energy. Thus, good children must go straight home after school and not go tramping through the fields!
Another famous description comes from Okayama.
There, ao-bōzu are said to be blue or green giant priests who take up residence in uninhabited homes. Sometimes this results in them moving into inhabited homes while their owners are away, resulting in a big surprise when the owners return! These ao-bōzu are generally depicted with two eyes instead of just one. This version of the ao-bōzu is popularized in yokai karuta cards.
In Yamaguchi and West Japan,
they are considered minor deities. They appear before humans on the road and challenge them to sumo matches. Because these ao-bōzu look only as big as children, many a person has foolishly accepted the challenge, only to find himself flung to the ground with god-like strength and potentially lethal speed. Because of the similarity of this story with the hitotsume-kozō of East Japan, there are theories suggesting a connection to the ancient ghost religions of old Japan. In these shamanistic proto-religions, one-eyed monsters were often fallen gods and bringers of evil, sent to do the bidding of larger deities. They could be kept at bay with woven baskets, or other objects with many holes, which the monsters viewed as hundreds of eyes and kept away out of fear or jealousy.
In Kagawa and Shikoku,
they appear late at night to young women and ask them, “Would you like to hang by your neck?” If the woman says no, the ao-bōzu disappears without a word. However, if she ignores him or says nothing, he attacks her with lightning speed and knocks her out. Then he hangs her by the neck!
Because there are so many different accounts,
and because there are so many different kinds of nasty priest yokai, it’s impossible to tell which, if any, are the real ao-bōzu, and which are variations of other kinds of yokai. Maybe they all are. Maybe an ao-bōzu is simply any unskilled priest who turns from the path of his teachings and falls into wickedness, transforming into a yokai. In any case, if you happen to see a one-eyed blue priest, you should probably stay away!

When the babysitter was preparing food for the family and bring it to the fields, an Ao-Bozu came into the kitchen and suggested she should hang herself from the neck.
The babysitter tried to ignore the monster, but he grabbed her and made her loose conscience. The baby begun to cry out loud and grandmother from the other room came to pry into the kitchen.
The babysitter had already hung herself from the neck. Grandma cut the rope and placed the girl on the floor, where she came to herself and was saved.

「坊主」の意味はいろいろあるが何だろう。これは〈そして、日本列島の東国房総　十九句〉と前書のある殆どが海辺の句の中の一句であることから、もしかしたら「青坊主」というのは海そのものを擬人化して言ったもののようにも取れる。あるいはこの「朝の馬」が青い馬だったのかもしれないし、あるいは坊さんか子どもか。私としては、馬そのもののことを言ったと取るのがぴったりする。
