udonge 優曇華 / ウドンゲ と伝説 Legends about Udonge flowers
udonge no hana 優曇華の花
This legendary flower is said to flower once in 3000 years and to see its flowers is very special.
source : togetter.com/li...
- quote -
In Buddhism, udumbara (Pali, Sanskrit) refers to the tree, flower and fruit of the Ficus racemosa (syn. Ficus glomerata). In Buddhist literature, this tree or its fruit may carry the connotation of rarity and parasitism. It is also mentioned in Vedic texts as the source of wood for rituals and amulets.
The udumbara is also used to refer to the flower of the blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea Sav.).
The Japanese word udonge (優曇華)
was used by Dōgen to refer to the flower of the udumbara tree in chapter 68 of the Shōbōgenzō ("Treasury of the Eye of the True Dharma"). Dōgen places the context of the udonge flower in the Flower Sermon given by Gautama Buddha on Vulture Peak. The udonge flower may be symbolic of mind to mind transmission between the teacher and the student, in this case, Gautama Buddha and Mahakasyapa.
Udonge is also used to refer to the eggs of the lacewing insect.
The eggs are laid in a pattern similar to a flower, and its shape is used for divination in Asian fortune-telling.

Another version tells of three large pots between the rocks. People could come and scoope as much vinegar, sake or soy sauce as they needed and they would never grow empty.
But one day a greedy man came and scooped too much, so the intredients turned to water. This was the punishment of Kobo Daishi.
Later the villagers begun to pray to Kobo Daishi on this spot.

ozuke おずけ is the local dialect for Miso soup.
Yamanokami is a woman and has three daughters. Before the daughters died, Yamanokami gave her a special dish of rice with ozuke おずけ Miso soup poured over it. Therefore people should not eat rice with Miso soup poured over it, because they will become a stomach ache or get inured if they go to the mountain forest later.
They might use a bowl of Miso soup and put some rice in it, that is a welcome meal.
