waka no toku 和歌の徳 the virtue of Waka poetry
Waka can move heaven and earth, it can even move a kishin 鬼神 Demon Deity.
When 北条氏康 Hojo Ujiyasu was at war, there was a wild fox who barked noisily all night, like crazy. So Ujiyasu recited the following poem:
夏はきつねに鳴蝉の唐衣己々か身の上に着よ
natsu wa kitsune ni naku semi no karakoromo onore onore ga mi no ue ni kiyo
Ujiyasu had spelled the word kitsune in Hiragana letters, in a way to divide it in the lines of the poem : natsu wa kitsu - ne in the second line.
When the yookoo 妖狐 crazy fox heard this, he fell dead right on the spot.
But Ujiyasu died just one year after this, and many think it was the curse of the fox.

yuurei 幽霊 ghost, enki 寃鬼 ogre - kori 狐狸 fox and badger
When a person dies, his konpaku 魂魄 soul hangs around for a while wandering. Sometimes it becomes an ogre and can be seen by humans. This is the origin of the ghost culture of Japan.
When an ogre is seen, it looks like a cloud or mist. Like clouds and mist, the essence of heaven and earth is concentrated here.
After a few years the soul might become visible as a fox or badger.

Nihon hikigaeru ニホンヒキガエル(Bufo japonicus)

- quote -
Japanese common toad - Bufo japonicus
Description
The Japanese common toad develops a snout-to-vent length of about 17 cm (7 in), with females being a little larger than males, and toads living in warmer habitats growing larger than those in colder places. The head has a pointed snout and is roughly triangular. The tympanum is elliptical and about as far behind the eye as its longest diameter. The body is robust and the stout forelimbs are about half as long as the hind limbs. The second finger on the hand is the shortest and the third the longest. On the hind foot, the first toe is the shortest and the fourth the longest. There is little webbing between the toes.
The skin has small warty outgrowths and its colouring is variable, being greenish-brown, yellowish-brown or darker brown. It is often paler and smoother in the breeding season.
... The Japanese common toad lives mainly on land, feeding on earthworms and small arthropods including ants and some species of beetle that are lamentable to other predators.

oogama 大蝦蟇 O-Gama, Ogama, the giant toad
a yokai in the form of an enormous toad. This one is even larger than a human being, capable of standing on two legs and even wielding a spear. Legends say that toads, which are long loved, are particularly capable of attaining consciousness and turning yokai, but there are other theories as well.
The Giant Toad is, as its name implies, a yokai in the form of an enormous toad. Called Ogama in Japanese, they are even larger than a human being, capable of standing on two legs and even wielding a spear. They are usually depicted as smoking a pipe.

絵本百物語 Ehon Hyaku Monogatari
Suoo no Oogama 「周防の大蟆」(すおうのおおがま)
A giant toad lived in 周防国の岩国山 (present day Yamaguchi, Iwakuni city) deep in the mountains.
It was about 2.4 meters high and could spray spittle in the colors of a rainbow. All animals like birds and insects, which were touched by this spittle, were pulled into its mouth to eat.
In summer it would also eat snakes.
Some pictures show it holding a spear in its hands, sometimes chasing humans with this spear.

北越奇談 Hokuetsu Kidan
In present-day 五泉市 Gosen city there lived a samurai called 藤田 Fujita, who went fishing in the valley 河内谷 Kawauchidani. Deep in the mountains he found a large flat boulder to sit on while fishing. So he climbed up there and prepared his fishing rod.
From the other side of the valley there was another samurai fishing, but this other one suddenly made preparations to go home in haste. He even called out to Fujita "Hurry, go back home, leave this place!"
So Fujita packed his tools and followed the other man. He asked him why the hurry.
"Did you not realize what it was you were sitting on? It had fiery red eyes and opened its mouth to yawn."
When they both sneaked back to the place, they found it was not a boulder after all but had been a giant toad.

ningyo 人魚と伝説 Legends about the "human fish"

The "human fish" 人魚 (ningyo) is most probably a Dugong.
Whoever eats its meat will live for 1000 years without changing his/her features.

. sennen bikuni 千年比丘尼 a young nun for 1000 years .
never growing old, because once she ate the meat of a "human-fish".

- quote -
The dugong is a medium-sized marine mammal. It is one of four living species of the order Sirenia, which also includes three species of manatees. It is the only living representative of the once-diverse family Dugongidae; its closest modern relative, Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas), was hunted to extinction in the 18th century.
The dugong is the only strictly marine herbivorous mammal.
The word "dugong" derives from the Tagalog term dugong which was in turn adopted from the Malay duyung, both meaning "lady of the sea". Other common local names include "sea cow", "sea pig" and "sea camel".
Dugong habitat in the Oura Bay area of Henoko, Okinawa, Japan, is currently under threat from land reclamation conducted by Japanese Government in order to build a US Marine base in the area. In August 2014, preliminary drilling surveys were conducted around the seagrass beds there. The construction is expected to seriously damage the dugong population's habitat, possibly leading to local extinction.

ryuutoo Yakushi 龍灯薬師 Yakushi of the Dragon Lantern

Once upon a time
the fishermen of Masaki went out to the sea for fishing, when the weather suddenly turned bad. They tried to get back to land as fast as they could, but the strong wind and currents drifted the boat further out to sea. The fishermen rowed the boat with all their might, but eventually lost all their strength and just sang the Amida prayer:
「南無阿弥陀仏。南無阿弥陀仏。」 Namu Amida Butsu, Namu Amida Butsu.

Suddenly they saw a light on the horizon, and then one more, and one more. They rowed the boat toward that light in hope for help. The three lights kept flickering as if they wanted to encourage the fishermen to do their best. This light came, in fact, from a pine tree in the compound of the temple.

ryuutoo no matsu 龍灯のマツ the Dragon Lamp Pine

The fishermen rowed faster and faster to reach this light and finally came to the beach.
"Thanks to the Buddha from temple Konren-Ji. Let us give thanks and pray!"
The fishermen stood in front of the pine and looked up to see the light again, but now all was dark.

"This must have been a dragon dancing and thus bringing light to the sea of Masaki!"

Eventually years later in a storm this pine tree broke down, but before it died, the fishermen took a branch and planted it anew. And to their surprize the new tree had three main stems. Thus they understood that this pine tree was the dancing dragon.
The tree we can see now is a much later generation.
